Every year on October 13, the International Day For Disaster Risk Reduction is observed across the globe to raise awareness on the natural hazards' subject, the exposure to these hazards and the importance of restricting the risks faced by these hazards. The day also celebrates the efforts of people and communities across the globe working towards raising awareness and reducing exposure to disasters.

In 1989, on the suggestion of the United Nations General Assembly, the day was established to encourage the 'global culture of risk-awareness and disaster reduction'.

At the 3rd UN Wolrd Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction held in 2015 in Sendai, Japan, the international community was notified about the harsh results of the disasters as they cause more damage at the local level with the potential to cause huge loss of life and economy.

This year, the International Day For Disaster Risk Reduction is focusing on Governance. More than ever, the current COVID-19 situation has made it clear that good local and national strategies are absolutely necessary for disaster risk reduction. These strategies must be multi-sectoral and linking policies and must address not just storms and floods but also climate shocks, zoonotic diseases and environmental breakdown.
