Every year on May 3, World Press Freedom Day is celebrated throughout the world. The first time the day was celebrated on May 3, 1994, after the proclamation by the UN General Assembly in December 1993. The objective of the day is to celebrate the principles of press freedom, to assess the state/ situation of press freedom around the world, to defend the media/ press from attacks on their freedom and to pay tribute to the journalists who lost their lives on duty.

The host for 2020 WPF Day is the Netherlands and the conference was to be held at the World Forum in The Hague (postponed in October). The theme for the 2020 year is 'Journalism without Fear or Favour'.

The World Press Freedom Conference Is organized annually to provide an opportunity to journalists, national authorities, civil society representatives, public and academics to discuss emerging challenges to journalists' safety and press freedom and its solution.
