This year, the theme of World Habitat Day (WHD 2022) is Mind the Gap. Leave No One and Place Behind. The WHD 2022 theme stresses the problem of increasing inequality and challenges in cities and human territories. The day aims to draw attention to and increase awareness about the growing inequalities and vulnerabilities heightened by the triple C crises: COVID-19, climate, and conflict.

The United Nations (UN) specified the first Monday of October of every year as World Habitat Day in order to reminisce on the state of our habitats and the fundamental right of all to adequate shelter. World Habitat Day aims to remind the world that we all have the capability, power, right, and responsibility to shape a better tomorrow for our cities and towns.
World Habitat Day's concept is to mirror the state of our towns and cities and the fundamental right of all to adequate shelter. The days aim to remind the world and people of its collective responsibility toward the future of the human habitat.

History
The first World Habitat Day was celebrated in 1986 under the theme of- Shelter is My Right. The city that hosted the first World Habitat Day was Nairobi. Other themes for World Habitat Day were Shelter for the Homeless (New York, 1987), Shelter and Urbanisation (London, 1990), Future Cities (Bonn, 1997), Safer Cities (Dubai, 1998), Women in Urban Governance (Jamaica, 2000), Cities without Slums (Fukuoka, 2001), Water and Sanitation for Cities (Rio de Janeiro, 2003), Planning our Urban Future (Washington, D.C., 2009), Better City, Better Life (Shangai, China, 2010), and Cities and Climate Change (Aguascalientes, Mexico, 2011)
