Deep Jyoti Gurung, a part of a seven-member team, awarded the first prize in the virtual hackathon ' MIT COVID-19 challenge: India turning the tide' organised by the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), USA. The international hackathon lasted for 48-hour. The event was organized to find solutions for COVID related issues and participants from across the globe took part in the hackathon. The pandemic related problems include Education, Economy and Health.

The event was assisted by the Atal Innovation Mission under the Government of India's NITI Ayog to find answers on Covid related issues in the context of India and was held through 'Zoom', the virtual platform, from 28 August to 30 August 2020. The team was awarded a cash prize of $500 and an endorsement from MIT to develop their plan which was addressing mental health issues in rural areas of India during and post the pandemic.

Mr. Gurung said, "On day 1, those participants who have a unique idea or proposal to solve a particular problem are allowed to pitch their idea via zoom platform within 90 seconds. Other participants who have similar idea or are interested to work with the presenter can form a team". The aim of the team was to reduce the gap between rural India and mental health professionals for a better future.

To support the 90 seconds speech given at the time of introduction, the team had to prepare a proposal within 48 hours providing a 360-degree solution. On the final day, each team is given a 03-minutes time to present their idea in front of the judges from across the world, selected by the event organizers.

Mr. Gurung, an assistant professor at Christ Deemed To Be University, led the team named M.A.H.I (Mind And Health Innovations) and is the first-ever person from the state to win the MIT Hackathon.
