Every year, on April 21, the public services provided by these civil servants is celebrated in the form of Civil Services Day. The first time the function for Civil Services Day was held in Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi in 2006. The significant role of civil servants is not often known by some people but they are the ones who keep working in the background for the smooth functioning of the public executive. This day was chosen to recognize the day when Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the first Home Minister of Independent India, addressed the Administrative Services Officers in 1947 at Metcalf House, Delhi. He called Civil Servants the ‘Steel Frame of India’.
The Civil Services Day is celebrated every year on 21 April. The day is celebrated to make civil servants re-dedicate themselves to the citizens and to renew their commitment to public service. The first day was celebrated in 1947 at Metcalf House, Delhi by the first Home Minister of Independent India Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel where he addressed the first batch of probationers of Administrative Services.
On this day, the 'Prime Minister Award for Excellence in Public Administration' is awarded by the Prime Minister of India. The award is presented in three categories: Individually, as Group or as Organization. All officers of Central and State Governments are eligible under this scheme. The objective of the award is to acknowledge and reward innovative and extraordinary work.
Apart from that, Civil Services day each year brings together civil servants to connect with each other and learn good practices. Everyone should celebrate the Civil service day for the great work of the servants.
