Study of the ancient Indian method of economics, politics, and foreign policy, Historical evolution of mathematics and astronomy via the study of the ancient texts, New universal sociological models that are based on insiders’ viewpoint, and Recreation of eco-friendly pigments and dyes utilized in traditional Indian textiles are among the nine broad categories under which the education ministry’s (IKS) Indian Knowledge Systems programme has invited research proposals this year.

Mentioned above is the second edition of the competitive research proposals programme to offer grants to advance research in the field. The winning proposals will obtain more than ?20 lakh over two years. The last day to submit proposals is October 30, and the names of the chosen propositions will be declared in December. According to an IKS document, the nine areas have been recognised with the support of experts after taking feedback from researchers.

National coordinator for IKS, Ganti S Murthy, said the concept is to build a community of researchers in each broad area. He said we aim to rejuvenate the Indian traditional knowledge system through IKS. Thus, we are trying to promote research in groups and concentrated domains. He added we would choose 5-6 high-quality recommendations in each area.

Murthy said research in topics such as those in universal sociological models would allow India to display its frameworks to the world. He said, why should we subscribe to western sociological theories? There is a requirement to study whether digital or social media be examined from an Indic sociological view to deny certain sins and promote specific integrity.

The division is looking to discover answers to various questions under the political and economic thought and foreign policy category, including an Indian measure to economies, politics, and foreign policy.

It said India is the ground of incredible knowledge in the study of polity and economy, the Rajaneetishastra and Arthashastra, as presented in our great epics Ramayana and Mahabharata and the in-depth works of thinkers such as Shukracharya and Acharya Vishnugupta.

Indian empires of the last few millennia included Guptas, Pallavas, Maurya, Vijayanagara, and Cholas, who had thriving economies, transcontinental trades, sent cultural delegates to all corners of the known world, and even sent military expeditions in order to safeguard economic and political interests. These elements require to be studied in-depth to understand Indian political, foreign policy, and economic thought.

Associate professor of political science at Delhi University's Ramjas College, Tanvir Aeijaz, said the medieval period should also be covered while researching the Indian Knowledge System (IKS). Aeijaz stated, for example, in the case of political science, the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) should not just consider the ancient and Vedic times but also Indian medieval and modern historical knowledge. Also, the research should be accomplished without one-sided concepts or plans. However, we welcome the idea that the government is attempting to force analysis under this project, delivered it will be done democratically, Aeijaz added.

The IKS division has invited propositions under the traditional mathematics and astronomy category to explore the historical development of mathematics and astronomy via studying original texts or ancient structures and instruments.

The IKS document said most of the mathematics taught in schools today originated and was either developed in India. There is a necessity to study the relationship between the astronomical phenomena and the Panchanga for selecting the timing of the festivals and agricultural functions, traditional approaches for periodic revision of the astronomical standards, the study of the clarity and optimality of the algorithms originated in Indian mathematics and astronomy are a preference.

The additional domains of research could include historical artifacts brought from the archaeological excavations, the areas of Ayurveda, vipasana (mindfulness) practices of Buddhists, health, wellness, and consciousness studies based on Indian traditions, and the replacement of pesticides with customary alternatives. Sustainable agriculture, food preservation, and techniques for the management of water resources are also among the subjects.
