European Molecular Biology Organization Elected Professor From IIT Bombay

The Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering's Professor Roop Mallik has been chosen as an associate member of the EMBO (European Molecular Biology Organisation). Prof Malik is one of the nine associate members elected for EMBO.

He is the fifth Indian scientist and first from IIT Bombay to join the prestigious community of life scientists.

Prof Malik, after hearing the fortunate news, felt thankful to his students and collaborators for their hard work and talent. He said, "I am happy that they chose to work with me. Together, we have always believed that we can do as well as our peers across the world".

He is also a senior fellow of the India Alliance which is funded by the DBT (Department of Biotechnology), Govt of India along with the Wellcome Trust of the United Kingdom.

EMBO is an organisation which has more than 1800 leading researchers in the stream of Life Sciences. The aim of the organisation is to support talented researchers at all stages, encourage the exchange of scientific information, and help in building a research environment for scientists to achieve their best.

EMBO, in 2021, has elected 64 life scientists. EMBO, in a statement, reported that the 64 newly-elected members are settled in 21 countries out of which 55 reside in member states of the EMBC and 09 reside in Australia, Argentina, Japan, India, and the USA. Out of the total 64 members, 26 (41%) are women.

Maria Leptin, Director of EMBO said, "I am delighted to welcome the new members into our organisation. The new members will provide expertise and guidance to help strengthen the EMBO's initiatives".
