A Global Education Summit side event was hosted by the UNGEI (UN Girls Education Initiative), Sightsavers, GPE, Leonard Cheshire, and the World Bank’s IEI on "Gender-responsive and disability-inclusive quality education for all on 21st August 2021.

The motive was to present education models and finance mechanisms that are inclusive of differently-abled girls and to provide quality education to them.

While some hurdles were highlighted in the opportunities for education for differently-abled girls, a plan to overcome them and ensure inclusion was also laid out by the speakers.

Event Summary -

  • The progress though forward is still at a slower pace for differently-abled girls in comparison to differently-abled boys or children who do not face such hurdles. The quality of education has not come far enough and we are already suffering at the hands of a pandemic. With economic and social differences hindering these little girls more. Efforts need to be more in favour of them.

  • It is possible to educate these girls as we have the knowledge and allowance to send them safely to school. They can continue their education as show-cased by Leonard Cheshire and Sightsavers. There are already implemented mechanisms that are enabling inclusive education.

  • The means are available to create a gender-responsive and disability-inclusive environment in schools, such as the Girl’s Education Accelerator.

  • Much progress can be made by working on the already successful models.

  • SDG 4 (Quality education for all) and SDG5 (Gender Equality) are examples of it

  • Youth activists and youth-led organizations have transformed the scene. Their grass-root level work is very responsive and brings changes to learning for people with disabilities. Gender norms are being shattered and the digital divide is being tackled. These youth-led campaigns have bridged the gap and brought gender-responsive and inclusive education for all.

  • It is our responsibility to take action in favour of gender-responsive and disability-inclusive education. Heads of state, donor agencies, ministries of education, and all other key stakeholders joining the Global Education Summit are being humbly asked to listen to these recommendations and to ensure education for differently-abled girls.

Recommendations:

Intersectionality and data needs to be accounted for while going through these

1. A fully funded Global Partnership for Education to help achieve SDG4 or SDG5. GPE can showcase its commitment to ensuring quality education. Keeping in mind that a pandemic is ongoing, there should be backing of funds.

2. Schools should be equipped to include and prioritize disability-inclusive and gender-responsive education. These plans need to be aimed for as soon as schools open after covid-19. Teachers need to be highly qualified and equipped with the means to achieve such.

3. While handling funding packages and strategies being worked on it would be advisable to partner with youth-led OPDs.

4. It is much recommended that extensive research is done to accommodate different learning experiences for girls who are differently-abled and for differently-abled boys. The learning process for children with diverse needs should be thought of too.

5. To better understand why differently-abled girls and boys are held back from receiving an education - Data needs to be collected and analysed, standardized research with reliable data should be worked on to draw conclusions.

6. As an ending recommendation, we would like to emphasize more involvement and exposure of youth-led organizations, CSOs, OPDs, Religious leaders, parents, etc. The future is in the hands of the youth, they should have more say in this.
