The researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras are helping in designing novel RO (Reverse Osmosis) systems. The Institute researchers have identified molecular mechanisms in water flow.

The IIT-Madras conducted the research with the Netherlands-based Delft University of Technology and Swinburne University of Technology, Australia.

The molecular mechanisms will be advantageous in designing novel RO (Reverse Osmosis) systems that utilize carbon nanotubes-based membranes.

The Department of Science and Technology sponsored the study as part of the 'Water Technology' Initiative. The research members included the Prof in the Department of Applied Mechanics Sarith P. Sathian, Vishnu Prasad Kurupath from IIT Madras, Remco Hartkamp from Delft University, and Sridhar Kumar Kannam from Swinburne University.

The research team's findings were also published in Desalination, a peer-reviewed journal.

Mr. Sarith informed that there was a requirement for such advanced research as the desalination process of needed energy, which proceeds to the necessity of large amounts of freshwater. This ensures a cyclic dependency between energy availability and freshwater availability.

The team reported that the aim of this advanced desalination research is to diminish energy consumption.

The researchers' team investigated innovative methods to accomplish desalination at high energy efficiency. The team also tried to enhance the state-of-the-art and energy-efficient desalination methodology. This guided them to the research to improve the efficiency of RO.
