Every year on October 11, the International Day of the Girl Child is celebrated around the world to rise for their rights and raise their voices. The United Nations General Assembly assumed Resolution 66/ 170 on 19 December 2011 and declared 11 October as the International Day of the Girl Child.

The first time the day was celebrated on October 11, 2012. The objective of the day is to bring attention to the need to address the challenges and hardships faced by girls and to promote the empowerment of girls and to fulfill their human rights.

The theme for the International Day of the Girl Child 2020 is 'My Voice, Our Equal Future' which aims to provide the opportunity to get inspired by adolescent girls' imagination, their ability to recognize a problem and suggest solutions accordingly, and the change they are demanding and are desirous to lead across the world.

This year, the world is also acknowledging and celebrating the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action which work as the global organization for the empowerment of girls & women and the advancement of their rights across the globe.

Every year the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) organises an annual campaign on the day to address their rights and issues faced by them, and to amplify their voice.
