On Tuesday, the Meghalaya cabinet approved the proposal for setting up 12 new degree colleges in the state. The declaration comes months ahead of the assembly elections in the state.

Conrad K Sangma, Chief Minister, said the cabinet has also approved a command for renaming Capt Williamson Sangma Technical University as Capt Williamson Sangma State University. It is Meghalaya's first state-run university. The cabinet also approved the proposal of starting B.A. & B.Com courses/programmes at the College of Teacher Education in Tura.

39 new posts will be created for this purpose. Sangma said this was accomplished under the New Education Policy (NEP 2020), which needs colleges to have multi-discipline courses. The cabinet also agreed to 50 new posts for the (SGCE) Shillong Government College of Engineering and 47 for (CAPT) the College of Architecture and Planning Tura.

Sangma said the infrastructure of the colleges was 99% complete, and the government would spend Rs 2.8 crore for (SGCE) Shillong Government College of Engineering and Rs 2.7 crore for (CAPT) College of Architecture and Planning Tura annually. He said the colleges are predicted to start the first session by the middle of next year. The state cabinet also approved an amendment to the Meghalaya Health Services Rules to permit the Meghalaya Medical Services Recruitment Board to fill vacant posts via recruitment exams.

Sangma said the cabinet also approved a recompense policy for the deaths of undertrial prisoners under the law of the (NHRC) National Human Rights Commission.
