Every year on November 11, National Education Day is celebrated across the nation to commemorate the birth anniversary of Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad, the first education minister of independent India.

An esteemed educationist, scholar and freedom fighter, Maulana Azad designed the education system in independent India and was also an architect of top education bodies such as UGC and AICTE.

On September 11, 2008, a resolution was passed by the Central Government declaring November 11 as the National Education Day to honour the Maulana Azad's contribution to nation-building. The first celebrations were inaugurated by Pratibha Patil, then President of India, at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.

The Ministry of Education wished everyone on the occasion and tweeted, "Today & every day let's work towards reaffirming the right of every person to holistic, quality & inclusive #education".

Apart from UGC, Maulana Azad also helped in setting up IIT Kharagpur, ICCR (Indian Council for Cultural Relations), Sahitya Academy, Sangeet Natak Academy, CSIR (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research) and Sahitya Academy among others.
