In India, Engineer’s Day is celebrated on September 15 every year to acknowledge the contribution made by engineers to the development of the country. This day commemorates the birth anniversary of Sir Moksha Gundam Visvesvaraya- considered one of the most exceptional engineers of India. Other than India, Sri Lanka and Tanzania also celebrate Engineers Day on September 15, 2022, in honor of Sir Moksha Gundam Visvesvaraya.
National Engineers Day 2022
National Engineering Day is celebrated to remind all the engineers of the nation, particularly civil engineers, to make Sir M Visvesvaraya their role model in achieving their objectives and contributing to the country’s development.
The Government of India decided to observe September 15 as National Engineers Day in 1986. According to the reports, India has the second largest number of engineers across the globe. Often at times, India is also known as the country of engineers. The day operates as a reminder to all engineers, primarily civil engineers, to make Sir Visvesvaraya their role models and work towards achieving goals for the advancement of the nation.
History of National Engineers Day
Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya was born on September 15, 1861, in Karnataka. He attended the University of Madras to study for a Bachelor of Arts. Later in life, he decided to switch career pathways and completed a diploma in civil engineering from the College of Science in Pune. The invention of ‘block systems’ is attributed to Sir MV. He patented and inaugurated an irrigation system with water floodgates at a reservoir near Pune in order to boost the water supply level and storage.
About Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaray
He was awarded ‘Bharat Ratna’ for his remarkable contribution to the construction of India in 1955. He also conferred the British knighthood and performed as Diwan of Mysore from 1912 to 1918.
The invention of ‘block systems’ is attributed to Sir MV. He patented and established an irrigation system with water floodgates at a waterhole near Pune to extend the water supply level and storage. This irrigation system- installed at the Khadakvasla Reservoir, was later inaugurated at Tigra Dam at Gwalior and Krishnaraja Sagara Reservoir, KRS Dam in Mysuru.
