Indian National Sports Day is celebrated on August 29 to commemorate the birth anniversary of hockey legend- Major Dhyan Chand. National Sports Day aims to raise awareness about the values of sports to motivate the youth to pursue sports and make it an essential part of their lives. This day is also dedicated to all sports heroes and champions of India, glorifying their dedication and contributions to bringing laurels to the country.

Indian National Sports Day is celebrated on August 29 to commemorate the birth anniversary of hockey legend- Major Dhyan Chand. This day is also dedicated to all sports heroes and champions of India, glorifying their dedication and contributions to bringing laurels to the country. India is responsible for creating sporting legends like Major Dhyan Chand, also known as Hockey Wizard, Sachin Tendulkar, also referred to as Master Blaster, and PT Usha, also known as Udanpari.



National Sports Day aims to raise awareness about the values of sports- sportsman spirit, teamwork, perseverance, and discipline to motivate the public and youth to pursue sports and make it an essential part of their lives while spotlighting the importance of being physically fit and healthy.



Major Dhyan Chand



Major Dhyan Chand, widely known as the Wizard of Hockey, was a legendary hockey player from India. He was born on August 29, 1905, in Praygraj, Uttar Pradesh. Major Dhyan Chand joined the Indian Army as a soldier in 1922 after seeking his core education. He was motivated by Subedar Major Tiwari, who was also a sports lover himself. Dhyan Chand was a true sportsperson. He started playing hockey under Major Tiwari's supervision.



Due to his extraordinary performance in hockey, Dhyan Chand was designated as lance Naik in 1927 and was promoted to Nayak in 1932 and Subedar in 1936, which was the same year he captained the Indian hockey team. He carried on to become Lieutenant and Captain and was ultimately upgraded to Major.



Major Dhyan Chand was an outstanding hockey player. If the ball stuck in Dhyan Chand's stick, it scored a goal. That is why once his stick was broken and checked during a match to inspect whether the stick has any magnet or something else inside it. He was also a part of the three-time Olympic gold medalist Indian Hockey Team. Major Dhyan Chand was elected as the captain of the Indian Hockey Team during the time of the Berlin Olympic Games in 1936.



National Sports Day 2022



This year, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) and FIT India Mission focus to lay hold of the FIT India movement on Colleges, Ministries, Governments, Schools, and even private organizations by motivating them to actively participate in the celebration of National Sports Day. On this day, Colleges, Schools, Ministries, Governments, and Private organizations should inspire their students, staff, and employees to participate in any sports or fitness activities for at least 1 hour.



How to Actively Participate in National Sports Day 2022?



In order to participate in National Sports Day 2022, Schools, Colleges, Ministries, Governments, and Private organizations can visit the FIT India website- https://fitindia.gov.in/national-sports-day-2022 and provide all required details.



Schools, Colleges, Ministries, Governments, and Private organizations can download their E- Certificates from the Fit India portal after uploading their photos or links to the events conducted by them.



Schools can also share the posts, images, and videos of the activities conducted on their social media channels with #NationalSportsDay and tag @FitIndiaOff.
