The Nobel Prize for Medicine or Physiology has been awarded to Americans Charles M Rice and Harvey J Alter, and British scientist Michael Houghton for the discovery of the Hepatitis C Virus.



According to the estimate of the World Health Organisation, there are more than 70 million cases of hepatitis around the world which causes 04 lakh deaths each year as this disease is a chronic disease and causes liver inflammation and sometimes, cancer.



The member of the Nobel Committee and the secretary of the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet Thomas Perlmann announced the winners during a press conference held at Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden.



The awardees have been awarded a gold medal along with the huge prize money of 10 million Swedish Kronor, i.e. $1,118,000, from the bequest left by the founder of the prize Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel.



This year, due to the COCID-19 pandemic, medical research has a distinct significance as it highlights the importance the research possesses for economies and societies around the globe.
