Every year, Children’s Day is observed across India on November 14. After the death of India’s first prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, adorably referred to as Chacha Nehru, India marked this special day as Children's day. Jawaharlal Nehru observed his birthday on November 14. Nehru was a renowned advocate for Children’s rights and an all-inclusive education system where learning is unrestricted to everyone. He acknowledged that children are the tomorrow of the country and the foundation of society.

History

Earlier, Children’s day was observed in India on November 20 because the United Nations marked the day as World Children’s day. But, after the death of Jawaharlal Nehru, the Indian parliament passed a resolution to observe his birthday as Children’s day.

Nehru died in 1964, and since then, to celebrate his birth anniversary, Children’s day is celebrated on November 14.

Significance

Adorably known as Chacha Nehru, Jawaharlal Nehru always felt that children are the tomorrow of the country and the foundation of our society. Children’s day also aims to boost awareness of Children's education and rights and to notice that proper care is accessible to all.

Celebration

Children’s Day is celebrated among children and adults all over the country. It is the day when children are poured with love, gifts, and pampering. Children’s day is celebrated in schools where the teachers arrange programmes and fun performances for the children, who are also showered with gifts that consist of eatables, cards, and books.

On Children’s day in India, students look forward to seeing their teachers set on performances in schools for their enjoyment. During the first two years of the coronavirus pandemic, many schools organised entire celebrations through online platforms such as Zoom.

With schools reopened now, we can celebrate the importance of the safety, well-being, and education of the children, particularly those harshly affected by the covid-19 pandemic. So, this children’s day, let us promote learning, prioritise health and ensure their well-being.
