National Unity Day, or Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, is celebrated on October 31. The day aims to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who served as the first Home Minister of India after Independence. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel is also known as the Iron Man of India for his measures for the unification of more than 550 princely states. This year observes the 147th anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.



History

The first National Unity Day was celebrated in 2014. In 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared Patel's birth anniversary as National Unity Day. The concept behind National Unity Day is to make people mindful of the power or strength of staying together.

On the special day of National Unity Day, President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and other authorities paid honor and tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also participated in the National Unity Day programme at the Statue of Unity in Kevadiya in the Narmada district of Gujarat.

Statue Of Unity

The Statue of Unity was inaugurated in 2018 in order to pay tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The Statue is the world's tallest Statue of Unity, with a height of 182 meters. The tallest Statue of Unity signifies spiritual, national, academic, and historical values.
