'Padhna Likhna Abhiyaan', a new literacy scheme of the government is being launched to achieve the goal of total literacy by 2030. The announcement was made by the Union Education Minister Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal.

Dr. Pokhriyal, at an event on the occasion of the International Literacy Day, said that the main objective of the programme is to transmit functional literacy and numeracy to 57 lakh non-numerate and non-literate adults in both urban and rural areas across the nation. The scheme will cover the students of the age of 15 years and above.

The scheme will principally incorporate scheduled caste, scheduled tribe, women, minorities and other disadvantaged sections. The districts having the literacy rate of women less than 60% will also be given priority.

The ministry called upon all contributors including, state governments, corporate bodies, civil society institutions etc. to unite to transform India towards 'Saakshar Bharat - Atmanirbhar Bharat'.

Under the program, students will also be encouraged to teach illiterate elderly populations of their respective areas.
