Researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT Madras) have recently invented a novel. It is a non-invasive device developed to evaluate the health and age of blood vessels and deliver early screening for cardiovascular illnesses.
ARTSENS is an advanced developed by the Healthcare Technology Innovation Centre (HTIC) at IIT Madras, planned for routine medical check-ups, even by non-experts, to assess and predict vascular health. This tool uses a particular non-imaging probe and a computing system in order to operate effectively.
More than 5,000 human subjects have experienced evaluations using this instrument. It has already reserved five utility patents in the United States, European Union, and India, as well as ten design patents, with 28 patents awaiting approval in various jurisdictions.
The developed tool is ready for technology transfer and commercialisation after comprehensive testing. The IIT Madras researchers team plans to deploy this to operate over a million vascular screenings every year.
The technology and field results have already been published in more than 100 scientific peer-reviewed publications. The latest research papers were published in the esteemed peer-reviewed Journal of Hypertension.
Assistant Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Madras, Dr. Jayaraj Joseph led the research. Dr. P M. Nabeel, Lead Research Scientist, HTIC-IIT Madras, V, Raj Kiran, Ph.D. Scholar from IIT Madras and Dr. Jayaraj Joseph co-authored the paper in the Journal of Hypertension.
Despite enormous advances in treatments and techniques, heart and blood vessel-related diseases resume to be the ultimate cause of death. Early detection and timely intervention is the key.
Emphasizing the unique characteristics of ARTSENS®, Dr. Jayaraj Joseph said: Trustworthy assessment of vascular health needs measurement to be achieved directly on the blood vessel walls, not the skin surface. Our ARTSENS tool can evaluate the impact of molecular and protein level shifts in the vessel wall caused due to disease and aging by calculating the material property in a thoroughly non-invasive and accurate manner.
Dr. Jayaraj Joseph added that ARTSENS® makes vascular aging checks available to a large population in clinical and non-clinical settings such as in a gym, health care centre, etc.
Scientists and researchers at Radboud University Medical Center, The Netherlands, are utilizing this device in order to investigate the relationship between arterial age, physical activity, and cardiovascular events.
ARTSENS® reviews arterial stiffness and central blood pressure. The tool contains pressure cuffs to be attached to the upper arm and thighs, and an investigation is applied to the surface of the neck to detect the carotid artery. It calculates carotid arterial stiffness, wave velocity of the aortic pulse, and central blood pressure, all three being crucial markers of cardiovascular health.
