University Grants Commission (UGC) has taken important decisions regarding the doctoral research to be conducted by research institutes and universities across the nation. The Commission has made several significant changes in it's policy, from holding viva to the requirement of number of publications prior to the thesis submission, notified Allahabad University officials.

In the recent change, the UGC has released the notification allowing the part-time PhD to the teachers and/ or employees. Earlier, the government employees or teachers had to take study leave from their departments to continue research.

Moreover, in another change, the Commission has also increased the number of examiners for a PhD thesis. At present practice, the permission has been granted for 03 examiners for thesis evaluation which includes the guide of the research scholar and 02 external examiners. Earlier, one external instructor was from the research scholar's own state and the other was from another state. The UGC has also set the rules for 01 examiner being from outside the university or institution and the other to be an esteemed academician from abroad, added officials.

Furthermore, the Commission has also announced to not recognise the research work done through online or distant mode.

Also, the Commission has notified that the permanent teachers who have 03 years left for their retirement, cannot enrol any student for research. However, they can guide/ suggest the PhD scholar as a co-guide but that too till the age of 70.

The UGC also made another important change i.e. the PhD scholars can now submit their thesis without prior submission of research journals. “The requirement of publication of two papers during the course of research has been done away with”, informed the Dean (Research and Development) of Allahabad University, Prof SI Rizvi.

The PhD now will be of at least 03 years including 06 months of course work and the maximum duration to complete PhD will be 06 years.
