Overview

The Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE), also known as C1 Advanced, is an English Test for candidates who have the skills to make the most of studying, working and living in English-speaking countries. CAE being one of the most popular exams of the Cambridge English that ensures the applicant has in-depth & high level knowledge of the language, and also the required language skills that universities and employers are looking for. This test is considered a C1 Advanced level qualification in English.

Cambridge English, also known as English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) is a department of Cambridge University and conduct English exams such as PET, KET, FCE, CAE, and CPE which is recognised as a proof of the ability to use English around the world by thousands of universities, employers and government ministries for study, work and visas. The following detail is regarding C1 Advanced test.

Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) Selection Procedure: There are four sections of the CAE test:

  • Reading and Use of English

  • Writing

  • Listening

  • Speaking

Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) Exam Pattern: 

The test is conducted in both modes i.e. in  Online as well as Offline. The total time duration of the test is about 04 hours. The test is conducted monthly but not one institute administers both types of tests. The level of the exam is C1/Advanced.

Reading and Use of English

  • There is a total of 8 parts in this section and the no. of questions is 56.

  • The total weightage of this section is 40%

  • The total time duration of the Reading section is 01 hour and 30 minutes.

Writing

  • There are total of two parts in this section.

  • The total time duration of the Writing section is 01 hour and 30 minutes.

  • The total weightage of this section is 20%.

Listening

  • There are total of 4 parts in this section and 30 questions.

  • The total time duration of the Listening section is 40 minutes.

  • The total weightage of this section is 20%.

Speaking

  • There are total 04 parts in this section.

  • The total time duration of the Speaking section is 15 minutes.

  • The total weightage of this section is 20%.

Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) Eligibility Criteria: 

  • Age criteria: There is no age limit.

  • Educational Criteria: Candidates studying in 12th apply for the test wishing to apply for undergraduate in the US, UK, Canada & other countries

  • Applicants, irrespective of their age and background, can also apply for this test.

- Reading and Use of English:

  • Part 1-Cloze Test Multiple Choice

  • Part 2-Open Cloze

  • Part 3-Word Formation

  • Part 4-Word Transformation

  • Part 5-Sentences with MCQ questions

  • Part 6-Cross Text Multiple Matching

  • Part 7-Passage with missing sentences

  • Part 8-Multiple Matching

- Writing:

  • Part 1-Essay writing.

  • Part 2-A Letter/Email, a Proposal, Report or Review writing.

  • Applicants are judged over different subjects such as Content, Organisation, Language & Communicative Achievement.

- Listening:

  • Part 1-Short extracts from different passages having MCQs.

  • Part 2-There are gapped sentences to complete after listening to the content.

  • Part 3- A recording for longer time having MCQ

  • Part 4-Multiple matching

- Speaking:

  • Speaking test is done between two candidates and two examiners examine them out of which only one participant in the conversation.

  • 1st part is a short question-answer between an applicant(each applicant) and an examiner.

  • 2nd part is Visual looking session and discussing it with each candidate.

  • 3rd part is a two-way conversation between the candidates.

  • 4th part is a discussion between the candidates regarding the conversation (Part 3).

  • Candidates are judged as per their pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary, grammar and interactive communication of the language.

Ques 1. What is the purpose of the CAE test?

Ans. The purpose of the test is to ensure that the applicant has in depth & high level knowledge of the language and the required language skills that universities and employers are looking for. It is also considered as the logical step in the language learning journey between B2 First and C2 Proficiency.

Ques 2. What is the difficulty level of the test?

Ans. The difficulty level of the test is C1 Advanced so that after acquiring the certificate applicants can apply for the professional English qualification.

Ques 3. What are the scores for the test?

Ans. Following are the scores:

  • A, B, C are considered to pass

  • D, E or U are considered to fail

  • CAE qualifiers are accepted for entry to some Universities.

  • Candidates receive a certificate if the performance ranges between CEFR Levels B2 and C2.

  • If a candidate does not pass, but still does reasonably well a B2 certificate is issued.

Ans. The tests are conducted at designated test centers.

Ans. Fees are set by Test Centres but in general, it is around 150 euros.

Ans. Scores for the FCE exam range from 180 to 199. 

Ques 7. How long is the Cambridge certificate test valid for?

Ans. There is no such restrictions for Cambridge tests (KET, PET, FCE, CAE, and CPE).

Ans. Following are the steps:

Ans. There are over 2,800 centers in 130 countries around the world and the centers get inspected by Cambridge English to meet the standards.

Ans. The fifth level of English as per the CEFR or Common European Framework of Reference is English level C1. It's a definition of different language levels written by the Council of Europe and is also called 'Advanced'.
