Overview

Indian Statistical Institute, held the ISI Admission Test( Indian Statistical Institute Admission Test) . Admission to the academic programmes provide at the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. ISI is strictly based on the merits which is evaluated from the performance of the applicants in ISI admission tests and interviews. The past academic records of the applicants are also taken into consideration for the evaluation of the performance. 

Conducting Body: ISI Admission Test is held by the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata for providing admissions to its various Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses. The test is held annually in different centers across India  for applicants who want to continue their stuudy in M.Stat./M.Math.

Selection Procedure:- The selection of the applicants is done on the basis of their performances in the following sections:

  • Written Test

  • Interview

Exam Pattern:

Written Test:- The written test consists of 2 parts and is held in Offline mode. The total time allotted for each part is 2 hours.

- Part-1The first part of the examination (conducted in the forenoon) consists of Objective type questions carrying 30 questions of 120 marks. There is no provision of Negative marking.

Note:- 4 Marks shall be awarded for each correct response. 1 mark shall be awarded for each unattempted question, and 0 marks will be awarded for each wrong answer.

- Part-2The second part consists of 9 Descriptive type questions of 20 marks each(conducted in the forenoon). Part-2 is divided into Group-A and Group-B where Group-A consists of 3 questions and Group-B consists of 6 questions. The maximum possible score is 120 marks.

Note:- The applicants are free to answer as many questions he/she wants. The best 2 answers from Group-A and 4 answers from Group-B are considered while marking.

Interview: The applicants' performance in the written test, the list of eligible applicants is prepared for final interview round at the India Statistical Institute, North-East Centre-Tezpur. Selected candidates are asked to download their call letters and attend the interview in person as per the scheduled dates and time.

Eligibility:

For M.Stat.:-

  • 3-year Graduation degree or a BE/B.Tech. degree with Statistics as a subject, or

  • B. Math. Degree from ISI, or

  • PG Diploma in Statistical Methods with Applications from ISI.

For M.Math:- 

  • 3-year Bachelor's degree, or

  • BE/B. Tech. degree with Mathematics as a subject, or

  • B. Stat. degree from ISI.

  • Sets, operations on sets.

  • Prime numbers, factorization of integers and divisibility.

  • Rational and irrational numbers.

  • Permutations and combinations, basic probability.

  • Binomial Theorem.

  • Logarithms.

  • Polynomials: Theory of quadratic equations and expressions,  Remainder Theorem,relations between roots and coefficients.

  • Arithmetic and geometric progressions.

  • Inequalities involving arithmetic, geometric & harmonic means.

  • Complex numbers.

  • Matrices and Determinants.

- Geometry:

  • Plane geometry.

  • Geometry of 2 dimensions with polar coordinates and Cartesian

  • Equation of a line, distance from a point to a line, angle between two lines.

  • Concept of a Locus.

  • Area of a triangle.

  • Equations of circle, hyperbola and parabola, ellipse and equations of their tangents and normals.

  • Mensuration

- Trigonometry:

  • Measures of angles.

  • Trigonometric and inverse trigonometric functions.

  • Trigonometric identities including addition formulae, solutions of trigonometric equations.

  • Properties of triangles.

  • Heights and distances.

- Calculus:

  • Sequences.

  • Functions

  • Limits and continuity.

  • Derivatives and methods of differentiation.

  • Slope of a curve.

  • Tangents and normals.

  • Maxima and minima.

  • Using calculus to sketch graphs of functions.

  • Methods of integration, evaluation of area using integrals, definite and indefinite integrals.
