UPSC - Engineering Service Exam (IES) Eligibility Criteria:-
A candidate must be:
-
Indian Citizen
-
Nepal Citizen or
-
a subject of Bhutan, or
-
a Tibetan refugee who came over to India, before the 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
-
a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania (Formerly Tanganyika and Zanzibar ), Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

For The Post Of Indian Naval Armament Service (Electronics Engineering Posts) And Indian Radio Regulatory Service Group ‘A’:

Passed Sections A and B of the Institution Examinations of the Institution of Engineers (India), OR,

Candidate must have attained a degree/diploma in Engineering, OR,

Candidates who have passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (India) are also eligible
For Indian Naval Armament Service (Electronics Engg Posts):

Candidates must have completed their M.Sc. degree or equivalent with Wireless Communication Electronics, Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as a special subject from an affiliated university.
For Indian Radio Regulatory Service Group ‘A:

Candidates must have completed their M.Sc. degree or its equivalent with Wireless Communication Electronics, Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as a subject or Master’s Degree in Science with Physics and Radio Communication or Electronics or Telecommunication as a special subject from an affiliated university.
UPSC - Engineering Service Exam (IES) Selection Procedure:
The UPSC: Engineering Service Exam consist of three major stages:-

Phase-1: Engineering Services (Preliminary) Examination

Phase-2: Engineering Services (Mains) Examination

Phase-3: Personality Test
Note:- Physical and Medical examination is conducted before the final selection of candidates, as per the rules of UPSC and the departments concerned.
UPSC - Engineering Service Exam (IES) Exam Pattern:
The Preliminary Examination is an objective type examination consisting of two papers. The first paper is of 200 marks with a time duration of 2 hours and the second paper of 300 marks with a time duration of 3 hours. A candidate needs to score at least 15% marks in each of the papers to stand eligible for qualification. However, UPSC comes out with the cutoff marks based on the number of vacancies and varies from branch to branch.

Phase 2: Engineering Services (Mains) Examination:- The Mains Examination is a conventional type examination specific to Engineering Discipline consisting of two papers each of 300 marks of a total time duration of 3 hours. A candidate needs to score at least 20% marks in each of the papers to stand eligible for qualification. However, UPSC comes out with the cut-off marks based on the number of vacancies and varies from branch to branch.

Phase 3: Personality Test: The final stage is a Personality Test having a weightage of 200 marks. Only the candidates qualifying the mains examination are called for the interview. The final merit list is prepared on the basis of the combined performance of the candidate in all the 3 stages of the examination, i.e., Stage-1, Stage-2, and Stage-3.

Ques 1. When is the Examination Notice issued?
Ans. UPSC Examination Notices encapsulate the Rules of Examinations notified by the Government. Examination Notices of all the examinations conducted by UPSC are uploaded on the Commission's website around 3 months before the date of Examination. Notice is also published in the Employment News.
Ques 2. How can a candidate apply for examinations applicants by the UPSC?
Ans. Applicants can apply online for the examinations through the UPSC's website https://upsconline.nic.in.
Ques 3. How much time is given to the candidates for applying the online application?
Ans. The time to apply online is always mentioned in the Examination Notice. A candidate gets about 3 weeks' time to apply online and fill up the application by following the instructions provided on the website page.
Ques 4. Does swapping of photograph and signature or their poor quality affects the candidate's form?
Ans. Poor quality of uploaded photograph and signature or swapping of the same lead to complications in the future. Candidates are advised to read the relevant instructions carefully.
Ques 5. Can a candidate fill UPSC form twice?
Ans. Yes. He/she can change optional paper, medium, choice of location. They can fill as many times as they wish. But UPSC considers the lastest filled form only and rest all are considered null and void.
Ques 6. Can a candidate appears in the final year of graduation of engineering apply for UPSC IES/ESE exam?
Ans. Yes.
Ques 7. How many attempts are there in UPSC IES/ESE exam for the general category?
Ans. There are no restrictions over no. of attempts but there is an age limit (between age 21 to 30).

Ans. Engineering Services Examination (ESE) is conducted by UPSC for four categories of engineering :

Ques 9. When the IES examination is usually conducted?
Ans. The UPSC conducts this examination in June (2nd Saturday, Sunday & Monday) every year. The notification is published during January.
Ques 10. Can a candidate having studied from an Open school/ University apply for Commission's Exam?
Ans. Yes, provided it is from a recognized Open school/ University. The candidate must possess the educational qualifications as prescribed for the exam and is eligible.
Ques 11. Can a candidate possess an Engineering degree in Production Engineering/ Chemical Engineering apply for the Engineering Service examination?
Ans. Yes, a candidate possessing a degree in Engineering in any discipline can apply for the Engineering Service exam.
Ques 12. Which documents are required for the application form?
Ans. Scanned copy of photograph and signature.
Ques 13. Which category is exempted from examination fee payment?
Ans. Female candidates, Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) and SC/ST categories belonging candidates are exempted from payment of Examination Fee.
Ques 14. What action the Commission can take in case of submission of false information by the candidates?
Ans. If any candidate found producing false information, adopting various unfair means in the examination like impersonation, cheating, etc., is liable to be disqualified and/or debarred from writing UPSC examinations as decided by the Commission.In this regard, a detailed stipulation is incorporated in the examination Notice.
Ques 15. Is it possible to change the Date of Birth once submitted in the form?
Ans. No, The Commission does not allow change of Date of Birth that has been furnished by a candidate and recorded by the Commission on any ground whatsoever.
