About UPSC - Civil Services Exam (CSE)

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the Civil Services Examination. It is one of the most competitive and prestigious exams held to recruit eligible contenders for various posts. On the basis of UPSC CSE Result, candidates get selected for Indian Administrative Service, Indian Foreign Service, Indian Police Service and several other Group 'A' and Group 'B' Central Services/ Posts

UPSC CSE Eligibility Criteria:

- UPSC CSE Nationality:

  • The candidate must be an Indian Citizen or subject of Nepal/Bhutan. Also, the Tibetan refugees who came over to India before the 1st January 1962 for permanently residing are eligible. 

Note: People migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania (Formerly Tanganyika and Zanzibar), Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam for permanently residing are eligible to apply for UPSC IAS  Exam 2021. 

- UPSC CSE Education Requirements:

  • In order to be eligible for UPSC CSE Exam, it is necessary for the aspirants to complete their Graduation with passing marks from a recognized university. 

- UPSC CSE Age Limit:

  • The minimum age of the candidate to apply for UPSC CSE 2021 Exam is 21 years.

  • The minimum age for the same is 32 years.

Stage III: UPSC Interview/Personality Test:

Candidates who qualify the Mains examination will have to appear in the Interview or Personality Test. On the basis of performance in the CSE Interview/CSE Personality Test, final candidates will be selected. 

UPSC CSE Interview:- The Interview carries 275 marks. The purpose of the interview is to test the suitability of the applicants for the services. The candidates are expected to have a keen interest in not only the subjects opted by them but also in the major events happening across the globe.

UPSC CSE Final Selection:- The final selection of the candidate depends upon his/her performance in the mains examination (the written and Interview combined). Therefore, the merit is decided on a total of 2025 marks (1750 marks for written + 275 for interview).

UPSC CSE Applying process:

To apply for UPSC CSE Exam you need to have a mobile number, date of birth, and email id. To complete the form of the UPSC CSE Exam here are steps you need to follow.

Step 1: Go to your browser and then search upsc.gov.in

Step 2: Click on the new user, the register window will open on a new page.

Step 3: Now click on the new registration in the UPSC CSE application page and then click on the register button of the page.

Step 4: Now you need to fill-up the form and need to provide basic details like your name, parent's name, date of birth, mobile number, email, etc.

Step 5: Now click on the submit button to submit your online registration form of UPSC CSE. It is advised that you verify their details before submitting the form. All the candidates will be issued a Registration ID for the UPSC CSE exam.

So now you are required to login with the provided registration ID, date of birth, and password to complete registration for UPSC CSE.

Step 6: Now you have to upload a photograph and signature.

  • Photography- The photo must be of white color or light color background and should be more than 4kb in size and less than 12kb. The photograph resolution must be 100 by 120 pixels in WH.

  • Sign- Your signature must be in only blue or black ink on a white sheet. The scanned copy of your signature must be in jpg format.

Step 7: Now login with registered ID and password to complete the Part-II of the application form of UPSC CSE.

Step 8: After you fill-up the full application form, you should preview the entire application form of UPSC CSE once to look for any glitches in the form.

Step 9: Click on Final Submit to complete the online UPSC CSE application form. It's advised that Candidates download and get print copies of the submitted application form of UPSC CSE.

Step 10: Lastly, candidates can proceed to submit the application fee for UPSC CSE either via online mode or offline mode. 

UPSC CSE Admit Card:

The UPSC CSE admit card will be released region-wise on the official regional websites of the Commission. You will be able to download the CSE admit card by using details such as their registration number and date of birth.

Ans. The question papers are of conventional (essay) type and each paper is of three hours time.

Ques 10. How does a candidate gets to know about the Cut-off marks for the compulsory Language papers?

Ques 12. Can a candidate fill UPSC form twice?

Ans. Yes. He/she can change optional paper, medium, choice of location. They can fill as many times as they wish. But UPSC considers lastest filled form only and rest all are considered null and void.

Ques 13.  How is merit between candidates decided If the overall marks of two or more candidates are equal?

Ans. 'Tie-breaking' principles are applied to decide inter se merit among candidates having the same overall marks.

Ques 14. How can a candidate check the attempts in UPSC?

Ans. No, they can't check the number of attempts left for the UPSC examination. They need to count the number of attempts by themselves. If they have appeared in the Preliminary exam and not qualified it then it is also considered as a count.

Ques 15. Is Tattoo allowed in UPSC?

Ans. It isn't advisable to have a tattoo (at least, not a visible one anyways) because Civil Services is a respectable job.

Stage III: UPSC Interview/Personality Test:

Candidates who qualify the Mains examination will have to appear in the Interview or Personality Test. On the basis of performance in the CSE Interview/CSE Personality Test, final candidates will be selected. 

UPSC CSE Interview:- The Interview carries 275 marks. The purpose of the interview is to test the suitability of the applicants for the services. The candidates are expected to have a keen interest in not only the subjects opted by them but also in the major events happening across the globe.

UPSC CSE Final Selection:- The final selection of the candidate depends upon his/her performance in the mains examination (the written and Interview combined). Therefore, the merit is decided on a total of 2025 marks (1750 marks for written + 275 for interview).

UPSC - Civil Services Exam (CSE) Admit Card

UPSC CSE Admit Card:

The UPSC releases the admit cards for the exam in Online mode. The link of the admit cards is sent to the registered emails and mobile numbers of the candidates. Separate admit cards are issued for both tests. The admit card is a mandatory document for the test and the candidate must carry it to the exam center along with an I.D proof such as Driving License, Voter Card, PAN Card, Aadhar Card.

The UPSC CSE admit card will be released region-wise on the official regional websites of the Commission. You will be able to download the CSE admit card by using details such as their registration number and date of birth.  

How to Download UPSC CSE Admit Card?

You've to follow these steps to download your UPSC CSE Admit card:

  • Go to the official website of UPSC.

  • Click on the Admit card tab on the page.

  • Click on the relevant UPSC regional website link.

  • Now click on the link available for downloading CSE admit card enter the required login credentials (roll number, registration ID and date of birth).

  • Click on the Search button.

  • View, download, and print the UPSC CSE admit card.

UPSC CSE FAQs:

Ques 1. When is the Examination Notice issued?

Ans. UPSC Examination Notices encapsulate the Rules of Examinations notified by the Government. Examination Notices of all the examinations are uploaded around 3 months prior to the date of the exam on the Commission's website and are also published in the Employment News.

Ques 2. How much time is given to the applicants to apply online?

Ans. The time is always mentioned in the Examination Notice. A candidate gets at least 3 weeks' time to apply.

Ques 3. How can a candidate apply for exams conducted by the UPSC?

Ans. Candidates can apply online for the examinations through UPSC's website https://upsconline.nic.in.

Ques 4. Which category is exempted from payment of examination fees?

Ans. Female candidates, Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) and SC/ST categories belonging candidates are exempted from payment of Examination Fee.

Ques 5. What provisions should be for reservation for SC, ST, OBC, EWS and PwBD applicants?

Ans. Reservation is for candidates belonging to the SC/ST/OBC/ PwBD/EWS category in respect of vacancies as may be fixed by the Government.

Ques 6. Does swapping of photograph and signature or their poor quality affects the candidate's form?

Ans. Poor quality of uploaded photograph and signature or swapping of the same lead to complications in the future. Candidates are advised to read the relevant instructions carefully.

Ques 7. What action the Commission can take in case of submission of false information by the candidates?

Ans. If any candidate found producing false information, adopting various unfair means in the examination like impersonation, cheating, etc., is liable to be disqualified and/or debarred from writing UPSC examinations as decided by the Commission. In this regard, a detailed stipulation is incorporated in the examination Notice.

Ques 8.  How are the Question Papers for the Civil Services (Main) Examination structured and What is the duration of each paper?

Ans. The question papers are of conventional (essay) type and each paper is of three hours time.

Ques 9. Can a candidate choose an optional subject not studied at the graduate/post-graduate level?

Ans. Yes.

Ques 10. How does a candidate gets to know about the Cut-off marks for the compulsory Language papers?

Ans. The minimum qualifying standards are indicated in the Examination Rules for each of the two Qualifying Papers i.e. English and Indian Languages.

Ques 11. Whether the Indian Language paper, for candidates from the States of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim, compulsory or not?

Ans. The Paper for Indian Language is not compulsory for the candidates from the States of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Sikkim. Even in the Online Application, if a candidate mentions that he/she is from these North Eastern States, the option for Indian Language automatically gets disabled in the Online Application.

Ques 12. Can a candidate fill UPSC form twice?

Ans. Yes. He/she can change optional paper, medium, choice of location. They can fill as many times as they wish. But UPSC considers lastest filled form only and rest all are considered null and void.

Ques 13.  How is merit between candidates decided If the overall marks of two or more candidates are equal?

Ans. 'Tie-breaking' principles are applied to decide inter se merit among candidates having the same overall marks.

Ques 14. How can a candidate check the attempts in UPSC?

Ans. No, they can't check the number of attempts left for the UPSC examination. They need to count the number of attempts by themselves. If they have appeared in the Preliminary exam and not qualified it then it is also considered as a count.

Ques 15. Is Tattoo allowed in UPSC?

Ans. It isn't advisable to have a tattoo (at least, not a visible one anyways) because Civil Services is a respectable job.
