Overview
NEST is also known as the National Entrance Screening Test which is conducted by the National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), Bhubaneswar and University of Mumbai - Department of Atomic Energy Centre for Excellence in Basic Science. The NEST Exam is conducted annually to offer admission for Integrated M.Sc. Programs in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics subjects.
National Entrance Screening Test (NEST) Conducting Body:
NEST is jointly conducted by NISER and the University of Mumbai in online mode at 90 exam centers. NEST is a National level entrance exam conducted for candidates seeking admission to a 5-year Integrated M.Sc. Program.

National Entrance Screening Test (NEST) Selection Procedure:
The selection procedure is given below:

The selection of candidates is based on the merit list of the exam.
National Entrance Screening Test (NEST) Exam Pattern:
The NEST exam is conducted in online mode i.e. Computer based exam. The time duration of the exam is 3 hours 30 minutes and the medium is English only. The paper is divided into 5 sections.

National Entrance Screening Test (NEST) Eligibility Criteria:

Qualifying Exam: Candidates must pass or appear in class 12th in science stream with 60% marks and 55% for (SC, ST, PwD) are eligible for NEST Exam.

Minimum Marks: Applying candidates should have secured minimum 60% marks and for ST/SC candidates, minimum marks of 55%

Qualifying Subjects: Candidate must be passed with the subjects of Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology and Physics in 11th and 12th

Age Criteria: Candidates belonging to SC/ST candidates there are ages of 5 years relaxation

Appearing candidates: Candidates appearing in the final year of their qualifying exam (12th) can also apply.

National Entrance Screening Test (NEST) FAQs:
Ques 1. Who all can appear for NEST?
Ans. Candidates, who wish to pursue 5 year Integrated M.Sc. program in Basic Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics) offered at NISER and UM-DAE CEBS, can appear for NEST 2020.
Ques 2. How can a candidate apply for the test?
Ans. The applicants can apply through online mode.
Ques 3. What is the application fee? What is the mode of payment acceptable?
Ans. The application fee for the General and OBC candidates is Rs.1200 and for ST/SC/PwD/Female category candidates it is Rs.600. Fee can be paid by online mode through SBI Net Banking /Payment gateway /Debit card or Credit card.
Ques 4. Are candidates appearing in the qualifying exam eligible for the test?
Ans. Yes, candidates appearing in the last year of their qualifying exam can apply for NEST.
Ques 5. How difficult is the NEST exam?
Ans. NEST exam is not difficult for candidates who have their basics clear of topics taught in the science stream at Class 11th and Class 12th level.
Ques 6. Who qualifies for the NEST exam?
Ans. Candidates who are appearing for the board examination must pass it by the time of admission into the program. Also, candidates must secure at least 60% marks in aggregate or equivalent grade in class 12th examination to be eligible for admission to NISER and CEBS.
Ques 7. Is Biology compulsory for the NEST exam?
Ans. No, Biology is not compulsory for the NEST exam. There are 5 sections in the NEST exam. The first section which is compulsory for all the candidates includes general questions. From the rest of the four sections (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology) candidates can answer any 3 of them.
Ques 8. Is NEST negative marking?
Ans. There is no negative marking in the General Section.
Ques 9. What is the age limit for various categories to apply for the test?
Ans. For General and OBC categories, the maximum age is 20 years. For ST/SC candidates there is an age relaxation of 5 years.
Ques 10. When and in what mode the exam is conducted?
Ans. NEST 2020 entrance test will be conducted on 6th June 2020 through online CBT mode.
Ques 11. Who should give the NEST exam?
Ans. Candidates need to appear for the NEST exam in order to secure admission in a 5 year integrated MSc program in science subjects (Physics, Biology, and Chemistry) offered at UM-DAE CEBS and NISER.
Ques 12. Is NEST tougher than JEE?
Ans. NEST exam comprises objective type questions (MCQs) from subjects like General Aptitude, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. The standard of questions asked in the NEST exam is more difficult than the asked in JEE Main.
Ques 13. What steps do I need to take in case I forget my login credentials?
Ans. In a case wherein you forget your login credentials, you need to click on the ‘Forgot password?’ option. Then you can reset your password by clicking on the ‘Reset Password’ option. For resetting your password, the NEST officials will send the required details to your registered email ID and mobile numbers.
Ques 14. I did not have Mathematics as a subject in Class 12. I belong to the PCB stream. Am I eligible to apply for NEST?
Ans. Yes, You can apply for NEST even if you belong to (Physics, Chemistry, Bio) stream as the paper includes a General Section which needs to be attempted by all. The other four sections are optional and a candidate can attempt questions according to his/her understanding.
