Overview

Key English Test (KET), also known as the Cambridge English: Key, is an English Test for applicants who want to communicate in English in everyday situations. KET also considered the easiest exam of the Cambridge, and this test is for candidates who want to make sure that they have started well. Also, they have acquired a basic knowledge of reading, writing, speaking and listening. This test is considered an A2 elementary level qualification in English that helps in learning English language. Cambridge English: Key English Test (KET) Selection Procedure: There are two types of the KET test:

  • KET

  • KET (for Schools)

Both tests are almost same and have the same type of questions also but the content of the 'KET for schools' is set as per the school age learner's interest.

Cambridge English: Key English Test (KET) Exam Pattern:

The test is held in both modes i.e. in Online as well as Offline. The total time duration of the test is 01 hour and 45 minutes. The test is conducted every month. Following are the different sections of the exam:

  • Reading & Writing 

  • Listening

  • Speaking

Reading

  • There are total 09 parts and 56 reading questions.

  • The total time duration of Reading & Writing section is 70 minutes.

  • The total weightage of this section is 50% (including writing section).

Writing

  • There are total 03 parts where 1st part has six questions having 01 mark for each question.

  • 2nd part is marked out of 5 and 3rd part is marked out of 15.

  • The total time duration of Reading & Writing section is 90 minutes out of which applicants are advised to use 40 minutes for Writing section.

  • The total weightage of this section is 50% (including reading section).

Listening

  • There are total 05 parts and 25 listening questions, having 01 mark for each question.

  • The total time duration of Listening section is 30 minutes.

  • The total weightage of this section is 25%.

Speaking

  • There are total 02 parts in this section.

  • The total time duration of Speaking section is 08-10 minutes.

  • The total weightage of this section is 25%.

Cambridge English: Key English Test (KET) Eligibility Criteria: 

  • Applicants, irrespective of their age and background, can apply for this test.

  • People, who wish to travel to countries where English is the main language, are also eligible to apply for this test.

- Reading:

  • Part I - Short texts and signs

  • Part II - Gapped sentences

  • Part III - Conversation having Multiple choice questions

  • Part IV - Sentences having Multiple choice questions

  • Part V - Sentences with multiple choice gaps

- Writing:

  • Part VI - Sentence Completion

  • Part VII - Text with gaps

  • Part VIII - Fill in a form

- Listening:

  • Part I - Pictures with Multiple choice questions

  • Part II - Long conversations and Matching

  • Part III - Multiple choice questions

  • Part IV - Fill in the blanks

  • Part V - Fill in the blanks

- Speaking:

  • Speaking test is done between two candidates and two examiners examine them out of which only one participate in the conversation.

  • 1st part is short question-answer between an applicant and an examiner.

  • 2nd part is Visual looking session and discussing it with another candidate.

Ques 1. What is the purpose of the test?

Ans. The purpose of the test is to learn A2 elementary level of English for everyday use, to understand simple written English and to interact with English speakers at a basic level.  KET is a basic level exam which boosts the confidence of the candidates to pursue the higher level exams such as B1 Preliminary and B2 First.

Ans. Following are the scores:

  • Pass with distinction (B1)

Ans. Scores for the KET Exam range from 120 to 139.
