Overview
The Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK), also known as the Chinese Proficiency Test, is the test of Standard Chinese (a type of Mandarin Chinese) language proficiency of China for non native speakers such as Foreign students and Overseas Chinese. The reference to the test is made through a standard or level of proficiency by the HSK level number/score. The HSK is administered only in Mandarin and in simplified Chinese characters.
Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) Conducting Body:
The test is conducted by the Hanban, an agency of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. The HSK test certificate is valid without any limitation in China and the test is considered a certificate of language proficiency for Professional and Higher Educational purposes.

Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) Selection Procedure:
There are 3 test formats in this test i.e. Basic, Elementary/Intermediate and Advanced. HSK consists of six levels namely HSK 1, HSK 2, HSK 3, HSK 4, HSK 5 and HSK 6.

HSK 1 and HSK 2 have a maximum score of 200 with 120 points as passing marks.

HSK 3 and HSK 4 have a maximum of 300 points with 180 points as passing marks. There are no minimum scores needed for each of the sections as far as the sum is over 120 or 180 points respectively.

HSK 5 and HSK 6 have a maximum of 300 points with no official passing score for either HSK 5 or HSK 6.
Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) Exam Pattern:
There are both types of tests in HSK i.e. a Written test and an Oral test and both are taken separately. The test can be either paper-based or Internet-based which depends on the test center. There are three sections- Listening, Reading and Writing tests and each has a maximum score of 100.

Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) Eligibility Criteria:

Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) FAQs:
Ques 1. Is there any place where the test can't be conducted?
Ans. The test cannot be taken on Kinmen, Taiwan or any of the territories under the Republic of China. Only the TOCFL exam can be conducted in these areas.
Ques 2. When can a candidate expect the result?
Ans. Results of paper-based test results take 1 month and computer-based tests are published 2 weeks after the exam.
Ques 3. What rank is needed to get admission to a Chinese university?
Ans. There are 11 ranks out of which rank between 3 and 8 are considered to enroll in Chinese University but this also depends on the subject being studied. A score of 9 or higher is considered a business-standard.
Ques 4. What is the ranking procedure for each format?
Ans. A student passing the Basic test of HSK attains the rank of 1 to 3, failing to meet requirements and no rank is granted. The Elementary/Intermediate test of HSK cover ranks 3 to 8 with ranking below 3 are not considered and the Advanced test of HSK cover ranks 9 to 11 with scores below 9 are not considered.
Ques 5. Is there any provision of scholarship also?
Ans. Applicants with excellent results are granted a scholarship for short-term language study in China.
Ques 6. What is the validity of the certificate?
Ans. The HSK results are valid for two years.
Ques 7. After the completion of registration, can a candidate change the test level?
Ans. If the test fee has not been paid, then the registration can be canceled and the candidate can reapply but once the payment is completed no changes can be made.
Ques 8. How can a candidate get the test score report?
Ans. The test score reports are mailed to testing centers after 45 days of the test. Candidates must bring their Test Admit Card to receive it.
Ques 9. What is the differences between the internet-based test (IBT test) and the paper-based test?
Ans. The only difference between the IBT test and the paper-based test is that the IBT test is conducted through a computer, keyboard, and mouse whereas paper-based tests are answered with 2B pencils and answer sheets.
Ques 10. How to pay the test fee after completing the online registration?
Ans. Applicants registering at testing centers in mainland China can pay the test fee online. But those applicants who register at testing centers in other regions and countries can pay the test fee directly at the testing centers before the registration deadline if online payment mode for the test is not available,
Ques 11. Can a candidate repeat the test?
Ans. Yes, a candidate can repeat the exam as often as he/she wants to.
