Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) FAQs:
Ques 1. What is the purpose of the JLPT?
Ans. The Japanese Language Proficiency Test is conducted in Japan and other selected countries to assess and certify the proficiency of the Japanese language of non-native speakers.
Ques 2. Can a candidate having a physical disability appear for the test?
Ans. Yes, special testing accommodations are provided for examinees with disabilities. Candidates must inquire at the institution where they plan to appear for the test. Candidates, who wish to make special accommodations, must submit "Request Form for Special Testing Accommodations" upon registration along with application form.
Ques 3. Where can the test be taken?
Ans. The test is conducted in all major cities of Japan. If a candidate is planning to take the test outside of Japan, he/she must find cities where the test is conducted in Local Host Institutions (on the JLPT website).
Ques 4. Can a candidate appear for only some sections instead of all sections?
Ans. No, there is no such provision.
Ques 5. Is the paper same for all candidates?
Ans. No. Test questions vary as per the level. Different questions are asked to determine the language competency accurately. Candidates are always advised to choose the preferred level while taking the test.
Ques 6. Are all test answers computer-scored?
Ans. The multiple-choice computer-scored answer sheet is used for the test. Each question has four choices except some Listening questions which only have three choices.
Ques 7. Is cultural knowledge of Japan required for the test?
Ans. No specific questions about Japanese culture are asked. There may be some questions from cultural aspects which can be answered easily.
Ques 8. How is pass or fail determined in the test? How many scores does a candidate need to pass?
Ans. Candidates pass the test only after attempting the all required sections. They also must have a total score equal or above the Overall Passing Marks and sectional marks equal or above the Sectional Passing Marks. If a candidate fails to score the minimum required sectional mark in any section no matter how high the total score is, that candidate is considered fail.
Ques 9. When can a candidate expect the test results?
Ans. A Score Report is mailed to all candidates. In Japan, Score Reports for the July session are sent in early September and for the December session are sent in early February. To candidates outside of Japan, the Reports are sent via local host institutions. Candidates receive the report for the July session in early October and the report for the December session in early March.
Ques 10. Can a candidate receive the results over the Phone or by eMail?
Ans. There is no such provision.
Ques 11. What is the expiry duration of the JLPT Certificate?
Ans. There is no expiry for JLPT Certificate.
