As per the statement by the Minister of State for Defence, Ajay Bhatt, on Monday, India's three armed forces are facing a lack of about 1.55 lakh personnel, with the Army accounting for the 1.36 lakh vacant seats.

Ajay Bhatt also said that the need for armed forces personnel and mitigating actions are reviewed on a regular basis, and multiple efforts have been formed to fill the vacant seats and motivate youth to enter the armed forces.

Bhatt stated that the Indian Army requires 8,129 officers, including the Army Medical Corps & Army Dental Corps. Also, the Military Nursing Service includes 509 vacancies, while 1,27,673 vacant posts of JCOs and other ranks stay vacant. Among civilians hired by the forces, there are 252 vacancies in Group A, 2,549 in Group B, and 35,368 in Group C.

Likewise, there is a shortage of 12,428 personnel in the Navy, including a lack of 1,653 officers, 29 medical & dental officers, and 10,746 mariners/sailors. Among civilian workers, there is a need for 165 in Group A, 4,207 in Group B, and 6,156 in Group C.

In the Indian Air Force, there is a need for 7,031 personnel, including a shortage of 721 officers, 4,734 airmen,113 airmen of the Medical Assistant trade, and 16 medical officers. Among civilian employees, there is a lack of 22 in Group A, 1,303 in Group B, and 5,531 in Group C.

In order to handle the personnel shortage, the Armed Forces regularly examine the problem and have initiated multiple efforts to motivate youth to join the armed forces.

These include an improved focus on enhanced image projection and publicity via various channels, carrying out career fairs and exhibitions, organising motivational lectures in educational institutions, computer-based online application filling exams, and updating the websites of services in order to promote the implementation of a strong recruitment management system, and more.

Other efforts to encourage youth include a candidate-friendly recruitment procedure, the creation of necessary infrastructure, entry of women through NDA, and the grant of Permanent Commission to the Short Service Commission officers for both men and women. With these efforts, the government of India wishes to fill the vacancies and reinforce the country's armed forces.
