Preliminary English Test (PET), also known as the Cambridge English: Preliminary, is an English Test for applicants who want to communicate in English in everyday situations. PET also provides a good foundation for applicants who wishes to study for a professional English qualification. Cambridge English: Preliminary English Test (PET) Selection Procedure: There are two types of PET test:

  • PET

  • PET (for schools)

Both tests are almost same and have the same type of questions also but the content of the 'PET for schools' is set as per the school age learner's interest.

Cambridge English: Preliminary English Test (PET) Exam Pattern: 

The test is held in both modes i.e. in Online as well as Offline. The time duration of the exam is 02 hours and 10 minutes. The Online test is held Once in every month whereas the Offline test is held only six times a year. Following are the different sections of the exam:

  • Reading & Writing 

  • Listening

  • Speaking

Reading

  • There are total 05 parts and 35 reading questions, having 01 mark for each question.

  • The total time duration of the Reading & Writing section is 90 minutes out of which applicants are advised to use 50 minutes for the Reading section.

  • The total weightage of this section is 25%.

Writing

  • There are total 03 parts where 1st part has six questions having 01 mark for each question.

  • 2nd part is marked out of 5 and 3rd part is marked out of 15.

  • The total time duration of the Reading & Writing section is 90 minutes out of which applicants are advised to use 40 minutes for the Writing section.

  • The total weightage of this section is 25%.

Listening

  • There are total 04 parts and 25 listening questions, having 01 mark for each question.

  • The total time duration of the Listening section is 30 minutes.

  • The total weightage of this section is 25%.

Speaking

  • There are total 03 parts in this section.

  • The total time duration of the Speaking section is 10-12 minutes.

  • The total weightage of this section is 25%.

Cambridge English: Preliminary English Test (PET) Eligibility Criteria:

  • Applicants, irrespective of their age and background, can apply for this test.

  • People, who wish to travel to countries where English is the main language, are also eligible to apply for this test.

- Reading:

  • Short texts and signs

  • Matching texts

  • True/False questions

  • Multiple-choice questions

  • Sentences with multiple-choice gaps

- Writing:

  • Sentence formation

- Listening:

  • Pictures with Multiple choice questions

  • Recording with Multiple choice questions

  • Complete Notes

  • True/False questions

- Speaking:

  • Speaking test is done between two candidates and two examiners examine them out of which only one can participate in the conversation.

  • 1st part is short question-answer between an applicant and an examiner.

  • 2nd part is Visual looking session and discussing it with another candidate.

  • 3rd part is speaking for 01 minute regarding the given photograph.

Ans. The difficulty level of the test is Low Intermediate (B1) so that it is easy to understand for each type of applicant.

Ans. Following are the scores:
