Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) FAQs:
Ques 1. What does the test measure?
Ans. The TOEIC® Listening and Reading test measures the ability to listen and read in English.
Ques 2. Who uses the test?
Ans. Top companies, educational institutions, and language programs globally rely on the TOEIC Listening and Reading test as a fair, objective measure of English-language proficiency for students and business professionals. Individuals who take the test include:
-
workers who serve at hotels, hospitals, international meetings, restaurants, conventions, and sporting occasions and need to use English on a regular basis
-
the individual hired in sales and technical positions in international business, managerial, commerce and industry that use English to interact in their jobs
-
new candidates to the job market
Ques 3. What is the test format?
Ans. The TOEIC Listening and Reading test is a paper-and-pencil, multiple-choice test. There are two independently timed parts of 100 questions each.
Ques 4. How is the test scored?
Ans. Scores are determined by the number of correct answers, which is converted to a scaled score. The scoring record provides Listening, Reading and total scaled marks. The total estimated score is determined by adding the two estimated scores together.
Ques 5. Why are TOEIC test items and answer keys not disclosed to the public?
Ans. TOEIC test forms are used in multiple test administrations and therefore must be maintained under secure conditions at all times. If the items and response keys were unveiled to the public, such publication would decay the honesty of the testing program. In addition, TOEIC test items and answer keys are shielded by copyright law as property of ETS, the copyright possessor of the TOEIC test. For this reason, ETS's TOEIC test items and answer keys should not be disclosed or used for any purpose without written permission by ETS.
Ques 6. How long are scores valid?
Ans. Scores are used to measure a test taker's English proficiency at the time that a test is administered. Because English-language abilities may grow or decline over time, a score record will not be reissued if two years have passed since giving the test. ETS does not need testing centers to maintain test management data beyond two years.
Ques 7. How are the tests administered?
Ans. TOEIC Speaking and Writing tests are administered via computer. Public tests are conducted on specific dates at guarded Internet-based test centers.
Ques 8. In testing all four communication skills, which test should I take first: Listening and Reading, Speaking and/or Writing?
Ans. You should take the test(s) that provide(s) the feedback you will need. For a thorough evaluation of your English-language proficiency, which you can share with companies, take the TOEIC Speaking and Writing tests as well as the TOEIC® Listening and Reading test.
Ques 9. How long does it take to receive scores of Speaking and Writing Tests?
Ans. Depending on your location, scores arrive in three to four weeks.
Ques 10. Why are test scores valid only for two years?
Ans. A test taker's skills can improve or decline over time. For this reason, the fresher the score, the more probable it is to be valid evidence of English-language ability. Records will be kept on file and reported for two years.
