Overview

The TestDaF or Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache (also known as Test of German as a foreign language) which is a standard language test of German proficiency for non native German speakers. It aims at people who would like to study or scientists and academics who want to work in German universities. The test is organized by the TestDaF Institute. The target group for the TestDaf exam is the student applicants who have obtained their qualifications in foreign countries and are willing to continue their studies in Germany.

• Knowledge of German should be at least of/equivalent to the competence level B2 since the TestDaF test classifies language skills at the fourth/fifth level of competence (i.e. B2 and C1) laid down in the (CEFR).

• Before registering for the exam, candidates must have already completed between 700 and 1,000/45-minute units of teaching in German.

- Reading Comprehension:

• Asked to read short texts about everyday university life, e.g. an overview of forthcoming events, a section from a university prospectus or a brochure and to decide which text relates to which task.

• Asked to read a journalistic text (450-550 words) on a socio-political or scientific topic and to answer multiple-choice questions on the text.

• Asked to read a text written using academic language (550-650 words) from a university publication or specialist and decide the nature of the statements as true or false.

- Listening comprehension:  There are three listening texts at different levels of difficulty

• A typical dialogue of everyday life at university.

• A radio interview with 3-4 speakers.

• A short lecture/interview with an expert.

- Written Production: There is only one task.

• In the first part of text, candidates are asked to describe statistical data, which is presented in the form of a graph or a table.

• State the opinion on a specific question for discussion regarding the above-described data.

- Oral Production: There are seven tasks in this section.

• Seven tasks that are put according to the different situations candidates are likely to face at a German University.

• Candidates are asked to obtain information, describe images/diagrams and summarise the content. They are expected to express and justify their opinion, give advice and suggest alternatives.
