Abhishek Agrahari (21), mechanical engineering student who previously attended the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) for training and research, has been invited by around 50 abroad research centers but insufficient funds turn out to be a great obstacle in fulfilling his dream.
Despite hailing from a low-income family in East Delhi's Mayur Vihar area, he has earned internship offers from Penn State University, Oxford University, and the University of Illinois in the US. But he no longer has enough money for research (as per his statement) and was looking for other ways to make his dream come true.
Realizing that only sponsorship could give him an opportunity to continue his research studies, he wrote to the Delhi government and applied for sponsorship. In a letter to Delhi Prime Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Education Minister Manish Sisodia in Delhi, he said that last year when the whole world was stuck, he had presented various research proposals from about 18 countries.
"Under normal circumstances, financial hardship is the biggest obstacle in my way. My economically disadvantaged family is not enough to help me in my research work. I am very much looking for sponsorship to visit foreign universities from January 2022", from his letter.
He also wrote a similar letter to Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' and East Delhi MP (MP) Gautam Gambhir asking for funding to continue his research and studies.
More than 10 days have passed (letters sent on June 22), but he has not yet received any guarantee or response. “My dream is to seek my knowledge through research in a variety of fields related to skills, complete knowledge and mathematics. I want to win a medal for the country and I think I can do it,” Abhishek said in a speech to IANS.
Third-year Mechanical Engineering student, Abhishek at the Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (TIET), Patiala, is working hard to put together his success story.
He said that he is currently collaborating with several remote organizations on a wide range of research topics ranging from clean and applied math to material chemistry, material physics, science & chemical biology.
At first, he said, it seemed like the work of the Himalayas, but once things became clear, everything was easier. “It is rare for students to receive research offers in engineering, pure sciences and mathematics, but I was lucky to have had this opportunity, and now it all depends on funding required for research," he added.
He says that researching and discovering something new every day has been the love of his life. Abhishek says, Abhishek says, “I liked this research from the beginning because I don't like going with the mainstream. I am always looking to discover something new.”
He said that reading and discovering new things every day is his love for life. “I was fascinated by research from the start because I got fed up with looking for ordinary things." I always want to explore something new,” said Abhishek.
He said - "All my work is totally based on research and various disciplines, so I'm learning a lot, from purely mechanical, mathematics and aerospace engineering, materials science, physics to Penrose's design,"
In addition to DRDO, he also teams up with IIT Bombay on water structure interactions with IIT Kanpur on water dynamics and is provided by laboratory facilities in Kharagpur, Indore and Madras.
When asked which university he preferred when he was awarded a scholarship, he replied that he would prefer Oxford University.
