After years, decades, Punjab has seen a massive change in its government, with AAP taking over Punjab’s governing responsibilities under the leadership of Bhagwant Mann.

As the AAP government has reformed Delhi in many aspects, the Punjab people expect the same from their leaders.

One of the significant reformations that AAP made in Delhi is the education system. Undoubtedly, the AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal has entirely changed Delhi’s education system.

During election campaigns in Punjab, Delhi CM and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal stated that Punjab Education System is demolished, especially government schools have pathetic conditions; rather than teaching in classrooms, teachers are sitting on dharna to get their demands fulfilled. Also, water guns are fired, and sticks are hurled at the teachers sitting on darshans.

Therefore, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal promised Excellent Education in Punjab as the AAP government will reform it right away, and Punjab’s education system will flourish like Delhi. He promised that teachers would now teach in classrooms. The entire education system in Punjab will be made excellent once the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) gets governing power in Punjab.

After forming the government, Delhi Chief Minister & AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal has substantiated that the party would provide the best comprehensive education reforms.

Moreover, he even asked teachers in Punjab to join the AAP campaign to transform the education system in Punjab and make it successful, like how they reformed in Delhi.

How the AAP government reformed Delhi’s Education System:

Delhi’s public education system was a disaster and deeply decayed until 2015, when the AAP formed Delhi’s government under the leadership of Mr Arvind Kejriwal as CM of Delhi. As of 2015, government schools in Delhi suffered hindrances at each level and in every aspect, from severe unavailability of rooms and teachers to gloomy motivation among teachers to teach and present their best. Most critically, students had terrible learning levels like 3 out of 4 students in grade 6 could not even read the books. All this happened because, for decades, Delhi’s education system was overlooked & abounded due to intentional rebellion behaviour of assigned interests of politicians and succeeding private school ‘businesses.’

However, since the AAP and current Delhi CM Mr Arvind Kejriwal have taken the responsibilities of Delhi’s governance, they laid a strong foundation for the ‘Education Revolution’ in Delhi by taking responsibility for enduring and organized efforts to re-establish the damaged education system in Delhi.

Within a few days of coming into power, the AAP government had taken a big step towards the reconstruction and reformation of Delhi’s education system. Initially, they expanded the education budget. As a result, according to the study of RBI state budgets in 2016-17, the Delhi government assigned 22.8% of its total funding to the education sector, which is the topmost of all the states in India and even more than the average of all states, i.e., 15.6%.

AAP government had a clear objective of providing accessible and high-quality education to all in Delhi.

Here are some of the significant achievements of the APP government in reforming Delhi’s education system:

Modernizing Infrastructure

AAP government instantly released a budget to address the issue of the shortage of classrooms in government schools. Also, they renovated 54 pilot schools buildings and began work to expand this to all schools in Delhi. These pilot schools were also equipped with smart classrooms. Additionally, the government has employed Estate Managers to ease the burden on Principals and teachers for sanitation, upkeep, maintenance and repairing work of the schools.

Capacity Building Of Teaching Staff And Principals

The AAP government has introduced teacher training practices undertaken by SCERT. It also launched “The Principal Leadership Development Program”, in which principals from all the schools meet and jointly work to deal with the challenges of a leader.

Making school administration accountable

AAP government also introduced School Management Committees under the Right to Education Act to bridge the gap between schools and government. Another reforming step in accountable administration is Mega Parent-Teacher Meetings to incorporate parents into a child’s education.

Improving Learning Outcomes

The government has taken significant steps to enhance the learning capabilities of children. These steps include the "every child can read" campaign, various mentor teacher programs, "Pragati – supplementary learning program", etc.

What Punjab's people can expect from the AAP government for education:

AAP leader and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal have assured the Punjab public to reform the education system similarly they did in Delhi.

Additionally, the party has provided eight guarantees from which people can expect that the AAP government will work to reform Punjab’s Education system.

  • Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal promised to provide a “good environment for education" in Punjab as they have created an educational environment in Delhi. He even stated about delivering high standard Education in Punjab.

  • In the second guarantee, the AAP prominent leader promised to secure all teachers in Punjab. Also, demands of protesting teachers for making the raw teachers permanent and filling the vacancies will be instantly accepted.

  • In addition, he also gave the third guarantee in favour of teachers and stated to make changes in the 'Teacher Transfer’ policy for the hassle of transfers of teachers.

  • He ensured that teachers would not do non-teaching work in the fourth guarantee.

  • The fifth guarantee promised to fulfill all the vacancies in the school so that teachers would not have to do extra work.

  • In the sixth guarantee, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal stated excellent international teacher training for Punjab teachers just like they did in Delhi.

  • The seventh guarantee is also for teachers in Punjab, and it includes timely promotion to teachers.

  • And lastly, the eighth guarantee presented by Delhi CM ensures that the AAP government will provide cashless medical facilities to teachers and their families.

So, this is how the AAP government has planned to revamp the Punjab education system. Though most assurances favour teachers, these practices will lead to a comprehensive development of the Education Sector in Punjab.

Most importantly, these guarantees create a flourishing public education system and environment as they were made in Delhi.
