A heartiest congratulation to India, especially the youth!!! Again the youth of our country has proved that we are no less than anyone.

Yes, our own Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu successfully gave India its First Medal at Tokyo 2020. Yes, she won the Silver Medal in the Women’s 49 Kg category with a total lift of 202 kg.

As per the details available, weightlifter Mirabai Chanu lifted 84 KG and 87 kg successfully, but she failed to lift 94 kg and placed in the second spot after the snatch. She also registered a new Olympic record with a successful lift of 115 kgs in clean and jerk.

She proved that Indian women are no less than anyone. She made everyone proud. Even Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated her on bringing home the silver medal from the event, stating it as "India is elated with a happier start and a stupendous performance."

Mirabai Chanu – Family and other information:

She was born on 8 August 1994 and always dreamt of being an Indian weightlifter. Along with winning the silver medal at Tokyo Olympics in women’s 49 kg and bringing India its first medal in the event. She has been regularly present in international events since 2014.

Yes, in 2014, she participated in the women’s 48 kg category and won the world championship. Also, she participated in the Commonwealth Games and won multiple medals. She was also awarded the Padma Shri Award by the Indian government for her contributions to the country and sport. Along with all this, the Government of India also awarded her with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna 2018.

Not only this, but also she always worked towards breaking her own record. Her biggest achievement was in the year 2017 when she won the gold medal at World Weightlifting Championships that was held in Anaheim, United States.

Talking about her family, she belongs to a Meitei family from Nongpok Kakching, Imphal, Manipur. When she was just 12 years old, her family identified her strength. At such a young age, she was able to carry a huge bundle of firewood to her home that her elder brother found hard to even pick up.

Career:

  • At the Glasgow edition of the Commonwealth Games, Mirabai Chanu won the silver medal in the 48 kg weight category.

  • At the 2016 South Asian Games, she qualified for the Rio Olympics in the women's 48 kg category but failed in three attempts.

  • In the 2017 World Weightlifting Championships held at Anaheim, CA, United States, Mirabai Chanu won the Gold medal in the Women's 48 kg category. There she lifted 194 kg in total (85 kg snatch and 109 kg clean & jerk)

  • In the Commonwealth Games 2018, she won the first gold medal by lifting a total of 196 kg, 86 kg in snatch, and 110 kg in Clean and Jerk.

  • In the 2019 Asian Weightlifting Championships, She won Bronze in Clean and Jerk at 49 kg Category.

  • At the 2019 World Weightlifting Championships, She lifted a total of 201kgs (87kgs Snatch and 114kgs Clean & Jerk) to finish 4th. In the 49 kg category, she made a new Indian Record.

  • Four months later, at the 2020 Senior National Weightlifting Championships, she broke her own record and lifted 203kgs (88kgs in snatch and 115kg in Clean & Jerk) in the 49kg category.

  • In the women’s 49kg category, she became the second Indian weightlifter after Karnam Malleswari to win an Olympic medal.

  • This year she became the 1st Indian weightlifter qualified for the 2021 Summer Games by securing 2nd position in the 49kg category with a successful lift of 115kg in clean and jerk. This time, she is the only Indian woman participating in the weightlifting competition in Tokyo Olympics.

  • This latest achievement of hers won her a Bronze medal and a ticket for Tokyo Olympics.
