According to a report released by the Oregon Department of Education(ODE), the statewide graduation rate weighs up to 80.6 percent, the second-highest graduation height ever recorded by the department of ODE.

It is the first time Oregon started measuring four-year high school graduation level; even though the state’s rate decreased substantially by 2% compared to last year, it is still the second-largest data reported. In 2018-19, the rate was 80, but it is now 80.6, which was 82.6 percent in the 2019-20 school year.

If we look into the analysis, we will find that Oregon's graduation rate reaches one of the highest levels ever recorded, by which all the students seem to develop knowledge and skill.

According to Colt Gill, Oregon Department of Education director, "The 2020-21 data is Oregon's second-largest graduation rate".He further added it is 2 points lower than the previous result. Still, we can’t eliminate the effect of the pandemic, which impacted the world's education system, and it has faced multiple challenges in the last two years. He said that he is confident that every family and educator would pull this success further by constantly working with students and their progress.

For the last two years, graduation’s essential need has changed widely due to novel ongoing coronavirus.

In 2019-20, the state said logically that students who are on the way to their graduation would pass automatically when they were sent home in March, which further added a high rate in state and district peak.

In 2020-21, essential skill assessment was made in-essential by eliminating it while keeping all the other ways of assessment by the state.

Throughout summer, districts usually invest $24 million in funding, allocated by Gov.Brown and some part by the Oregon Legislature, which would help many high school students counting around 18,000 who can get credit towards their graduation by Gill, ODE director.

Many of the districts are also contributing funds and sometimes using funds from Student Success Act to help in the improvement of access segment and opportunity to every willing student.

By canceling out oncoming disparities and challenges, each state plans to improve student success and achievements by their new way of strategy, said Gill.

According to Governor Kate Brown, when he became the Governor she founded Oregon's graduation rate was 72%, which was too low. Now she feels proud that it significantly increased to 80% today due to great effort, multiple investments, and various reforms that gave all students better access to education regardless of whether it is their zip code or anything. She further added that there is still a need for an enormous amount of work that needs to be done sincerely to address the problems of Oregon’s students because the great coronavirus pandemic affects academic and career perspectives. Still, mental, social-emotional, and behavioral health is much more impacted and needs serious attention for recovery to let the rate get at more height.

Governor Brown said she would always be devoted to working with every school leader and legislator to find every possible resource and benefit they can provide to maximum numbers of students during their school days and in a summer month.

It is very necessary that we continue to focus on what we need to do that has impacted our classes which were essential in school time. There is a need to continue all the learnings left unfinished.

There is an urgent need to support students in the next two years to get their credit while maintaining the proper desirable graduation path before and even better then.

Gill, the ODE director, says that he was shocked while seeing 2020-21 that students still manage to uplift their career while facing the huge challenge of the pandemic, which hits hard on the education system. But still, we need to track conditions to make a better strategy to continue moving upward.

Yes, indeed, we should not compare pandemic time results with pre-pandemic ones because it is not worth comparing when the pandemic hits education hard without warning.

Important results from the ODE graduation rate analysis data:

  • The involvement rate of students who participate in the Career and Technical Education(CTE) course significantly increased to 92.9 percent of the graduation rate, a much higher statewide average.

  • The number of students who completed their English Learner course in Oregon reached 84.2 percent, 3.6 percent more than the overall statewide average rate.

  • According to an analysis, the graduation rate for students who have experienced homelessness experience finally dropped by 5 percent, reaching 55.4 percent, the same as that of the 2019 period of analysis.

  • Students who belong to a community like American Indian or Alaska Native are one of the student groups with the highest decrease, which is 0.2 percent, reaching around 67 percent.

  • The graduation rate also fell to 73.5 percent from 76.3 percent as of the previous year for the Black or African student’s group but remains higher than 70.4 percent, which was the graduation rate during the 2019 class.

  • Similarly, the graduation rate for Hispanic or Latino students decreased to 77 percent, which was 79.5 percent during last year, but still greater than 76.2 percent, which was the rate of the 2019 class.

Overall, Oregon’s annual district profile drops significantly, which shows students are out of track on their way to graduation. Thus high involvement of educators and the students is needed to compensate for these all losses, which have been done till now.

Conclusion:

According to all reports and analyses presented till now, it is a very urgent need to have proper involvement of all those associated directly or indirectly with students’ development. The keen focus of every educational department should focus on every development aspect of students. The coming two years are most crucial where the impact of coronavirus needs to be eliminated as fast as we can; this is not only student work; it’s all the work of national building candidates who work for the nation.
