According to board members, the department of the US State decided to cancel the Fulbright scholarship program in the country of Afghanistan as the important head of the Fulbright board and finally left the overall scores of students at most risk of fatal punishment to the Taliban.
The cancellation of the Fulbright Foreign Student program has impacted many students, for both the types of students who are either semi-finalists this year or planning to apply in the coming future.
It seems like the state department has imposed significant barriers shrinking our ability to offer safe sharing of experience to all the future desiring participants after they have created barriers in Fulbright foreign scholarship in the last month.
According to one of the reports, there are about 140 semi-finalists who are directly affected by this, mainly those who disapproved of different opportunities for leaving the country Afghanistan early with the expectation of getting a postgraduate scholarship fellowship in the US. Heather Nauert, one of the responsible members for the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board for the country Afghanistan, said that she gets to know about the termination process by one of the released news articles and parallelly the board committee members took it back.
Heather Nauret informed Times Higher Education that we were all not happy after listening to the decision taken by the State Department to bypass the board of directors and various others who have access to the program. After the announcement of this decision that the selection process is no longer going to be performed from the next coming academic year, the officials of the state department have also declared that the fellowship program would remain as before for 100 Afghan students who stay in the US for their studies from early.
The board is charged legally because they have framed all the policies and planning of procedures for using the Fulbright program under the law of federal. State Department spokeswoman named Ms. Nauert, who was selected for the federal board by Donal Trump during his presidency, said she was very much worried about thinking about the safety of all the students who applied for it from before.
According to them, the selection process would not move further for the academic calendar of 2022-23 due to several imposed restrictions, which halted the process of exchanging the experience that we use to impart to future participants. They said that again when the situation gets better and would allow us to exchange further safe experience support for the students of Afghanistan to create abundant opportunities for them in the future, we would invite applications as soon the situation allows. The record of the Fulbright Program in the country Afghanistan seems to have created a long time commitment for the students, with about 950 Afghan students who applied to the Fulbright scholarship program having directly benefited since the year 2003.
Ms. Nauert also said that if the scholars in the Fulbright scholarship program would remain in Afghanistan, then the western-style of education might kill them because they have already received it. Afghan students who are semifinalists say they are extremely disappointed after this decision. According to one of the applicants, Sahar Sekandari, who has applied to this program, hopes to study data analysis. But he said afterward he decided not to leave the country; instead, he left that educational program and continued studying while living in limbo.
Azizullah Janish, one of the semifinalists, also informed that he was shocked after getting to know about this decision. After that, his opportunities got less to move out from Afghanistan for the offers which he applied for the Uk-based university to get a Fulbright fellowship. He said with a lot of disappointment in her eyes; after assuring us for the fellowship, they should not break the hope in between to create lots of instability.
According to Ms. Nauert, who well observed that even after this Afghanistan is under the control of the Taliban, various other workarounds seem to have been possible for the fellowship policy of Fulbright policy, which usually supports about 4000 international students speeds across globally. But they continue to support all the students whose countries are politically complicated, like Ukraine and Venezuela. One of the board members, Margaret Chai, insisted that we offer this program as soon as the condition allows.
The spokesman said that we would be happy to invite applications to get safe support for the Fulbright opportunity.
On the tweet posted by the chief of UNICEF Afghanistan's comms, advocacy and civic engagement whose name is Sam Mort, "Every Afghanistan's youth deserves to get the best educational opportunity, appealed to go a mile forward for them."
But after some time the cancellation letter came for offering longer-term assistance after the Taliban replaced it and took control over it and flexibility in the F-1 and J-1 process of Visa. Mustafa Jamal, a former scholar for the UK's cleaning, said, "This move made a similar resemblance to the punishment made for the peoples of Afghanistan by the double-edged sword."
Summia Tora, who is one of the first Rhodes Scholars to the University of Oxford from the country Afghanistan, expressed her all the top concerns about some of the facts like a candidate would be facing lots of worries after they have been informed with the sudden, surprising decision of not offering fellowship anymore.
Tora also added further, "Now it would be such a great hurdle for the Afghan students to get a similar type of opportunity as of this, I feel the exact pain through which the students are going on who have tried all the efforts from applying in the fellowship to submitting every document they asked for verification and which finally ended with such a disappointment of not getting anything."
According to another semifinalist who informed PIE, he created a situation of continuing education after stopping such a program. But all the fellowship officials believe that soon the situation would be an urge to offer the scholarship again as before we give.
