Staatsexamen Nederlands als tweede taal (State Examination of Dutch for Second Language), usually means as Staatsexamen NT2, is a regulated examination of Dutch language for those who are not local speakers of Dutch. Bypassing the State Examinations NT2 applicants can show that they have enough control over the Dutch language to be ready to study or work in the Netherlands.
Staatsexamen Nederlands als tweede taal (State Examination of Dutch for Second Language) Conducting Body:
The Staatsexamen NT2 is authorized by Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs (DUO) (Office of Education) on account of the College voor Examens (CvE) (Board of Examinations). CvE is although still accountable for the organization, progress of the State Examinations NT2, and procurement of sample papers.
The actual execution of the test is done by Cito [nl], a testing and analysis company with a global status, and Bureau ICE. While Cito is accountable for the speaking and listening examination, Bureau ICE is liable for the reading and writing exam. Therefore, Cito also gives further training for markers for the speaking exam and helps the entire process of ranking for this part of the exam.

Staatsexamen Nederlands als tweede taal (State Examination of Dutch for Second Language) Selection Procedure: The Staatsexamen NT2 includes two programs:

Staatsexamen NT2 Programma I
The Staatsexamen NT2 Programma I is for somebody who wants to find a job in the Netherlands or study in Dutch to secondary vocational training, the Dutch mbo level 3 or 4. That equalizes to operate at an autonomous professional or vocational training (level 3) or in middle administration or specialized service (level 4). The NT2 Programma I measures applicants at CEFR level B1.

Staatsexamen NT2 Programma II
The Staatsexamen NT2 Programma II is important for somebody who wishes to study or work at a Hogescholen (university of applied science) or one of the research universities in the Netherlands. The NT2 Programma II examines applicants at CEFR level B2.
Staatsexamen Nederlands als tweede taal (State Examination of Dutch for Second Language) Exam Pattern:
Both Staatsexamen NT2 certifications require various examinations, each consisting of four sections: Listening, Writing, Reading and Speaking.
- Writing (Schrijven)
The Writing (Schrijven) examination takes 120 minutes broken into two sections. In the first section, aspirants write responses directly into the computer, while for the second they must write their answers manually in books. Questions required both long (up to 150 words) answers and short (one or two sentences) answers.
- Speaking (Spreken)
The Speaking (Spreken) exam takes around 30 minutes. Aspirants must speak into the computer through the headset, responding to scenarios that are explained on the screen. Staatsexamen NT2 Programma I have two sections, Programma II three, both consisting of long and short answers.
- Reading (Lezen)
The Reading (Lezen) examination takes 110 minutes for Programma I or 100 minutes for Programma II. Aspirants read sections of text in a book and answer multiple-choice questions on the computer.
- Listening (Luisteren)
The Listening (Luisteren) exam takes around 60 minutes. Aspirants listen to sections of conversation on the computer and answer one question per section.
- Dictionaries
For the reading and writing exams, candidates are permitted to bring in three dictionaries:

Note: No extra pieces of paper or handwriting are permitted in the dictionaries. All aspirants' dictionaries are checked before each exam.
Staatsexamen Nederlands als tweede taal (State Examination of Dutch for Second Language) Eligibility Criteria:

Candidates who are at least eighteen years old and would like to study in the Netherlands, which is conducted in Dutch, should take the Dutch government language test NT2.
Staatsexamen Nederlands als tweede taal (State Examination of Dutch for Second Language) Syllabus/Subject:
Each NT2 exam is scored between 100 and 900 points, with a pass mark being a minimum of 500 points. Marks below 300 and above 600 are very rare.
- Reading & Listening:
As multiple-choice papers, the criteria for marking Reading (Lezen) and Listening (Luisteren) exams are straightforward, as there is only one correct answer per question.
- Writing:
The Writing (Schrijven) examination is marked firstly on the basis of the content, namely that it is adequate. This means that it is legible, written in Dutch language and contains the correct information, which is set out logically.
The text should also be addressed to the correct persons or people and perform the correct function (i.e. as a letter of complaint or an email to colleagues, etc.). Texts are judged on the basis of grammar, such as correct word order and use of preposition and verbs. Words are also judged on the basis of being used and spelled correctly.
- Speaking:
In the Speaking (Spreken) exam, aspirants must understand the text and speak in Dutch. Answers are assessed for logical and on grammar, as in the Writing exam. Lastly, marks are awarded for correct pronunciation, pace (i.e. not too slow) and logical consistency.
