The Arabic Language Proficiency Test (ALPT) Exam Pattern

Arabic Language Proficiency Test (ALPT) Exam Pattern:

The ALPT is not based on any specific course of study, rather it is based on the language use situations that would be experienced in real-life.

Section 1: Listening - The listening section comprises of three parts:

  • Part A: In this part, Applicants listen to a brief sentence and based on the sentence listened, they are expected to answer the question. The question examines the comprehension skills of the applicant.

  • Part B: Applicants hear a short conversation between two people, accompanied by a question to examine the candidate's understanding of the conversation.

  • Part C: This part comprises of a long section that is similar to a speech given by a spokesman. It tests the applicants’ understanding of skills.

Section 2: Reading Comprehension - In this section, one or two passages are given. Applicants are expected to read those paragraphs and answer a few multiple-choice questions based on the reading and perception of the material given.

Section 3: Structure - This section comprises of two parts:

  • Part A: Part A consists of a sentence with a missing word. Applicants are expected to finish the sentence by choosing the proper word from the choices given.

  • Part B: A sentence is given and various pieces of the sentence are marked. Applicants are expected to recognize the incorrect part of the sentence given.

Section 4: Writing - Candidates can sit for this part if they have completed the earlier sections, i.e. section 1-3 of the ALPT. In this section, 3 questions are given and applicants are expected to select 1 and write on it. Communicate your opinion. This part evaluates the applicant’s capability to create written literacy Arabic. This part is ranked based on the guidelines circulated by the America Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). The writing is evaluated on the usage of vocabulary and grammar, spelling, clarity and coherence, and punctuation.

Section 5: Speaking - This section is taken by the local teacher who meets the pupil online visa Skype or any other voice chat software. The local speaker of Arabic would ask a few topics and applicants are expected to answer those questions in Arabic. This part assesses the applicant’s capability to speak Arabic fluently and accurately.
