The Open Doors Report unveiled an ongoing trend, solidifying Indian students as a significant segment, constituting over 25% of the one million international students studying in the US for three consecutive years. This report underscores the enduring preference of Indian students to choose the US for their advanced studies.
The United States continues to be the top preference for Indian students seeking higher education abroad, witnessing a substantial 35% surge in the academic year 2022-23, with a record-breaking 268,923 Indian students pursuing higher education.
Eric Garcetti, the US Ambassador to India, commended this achievement, stating, You did it, India! Every Indian student in the US, alongside their families, deserves immense acknowledgment for this remarkable feat. The decision to study abroad, particularly in the US, signifies a substantial investment by you and your families. This exchange fosters stronger ties between our nations and shapes a brighter future.
The Open Doors Report unveiled a monumental shift as India surpassed China, emerging as the ultimate source of international graduate students in the US after a decade. The report highlighted a staggering 63% surge in Indian graduate students, totaling 165,936—a leap of nearly 64,000 students from the previous year. Further, undergraduate students from India witnessed a notable 16% growth.
India's prominence in the report extended to 69,062 individuals engaging in Optional Practical Training (OPT), enabling eligible students to gain hands-on experience in their chosen fields.
During the peak student visa season spanning from June to August 2023, the US Embassy and Consulates in India witnessed a historic surge in the issuance of student visas, totaling 95,269 in categories F, M, and J—a remarkable 18% increase compared to the same period in 2022. This upsurge reflects the sustained enthusiasm among Indian students to pursue education in the United States.
