As global education becomes more accessible, Indian students increasingly seek international avenues for higher education. The recent Indian Student Mobility Report 2023 by Global Education Conclave reveals a notable surge, estimating around 1.3 million Indian students pursuing higher studies abroad.

However, the post-pandemic period witnessed a spike in international student immigration, resulting in various challenges, primarily concerning accommodation, faced by several nations. Consequently, these countries have initiated stringent changes in their immigration policies, specifically targeting students.

Australia, a favored destination for Indian students, recently introduced new mandates for English proficiency tests such as IELTS, TOEFL, and Duolingo. The government increased the test score requirements for visas, emphasizing a higher proficiency level. Moreover, a Genuine Student test will replace the Genuine Temporary Entrant requirement, ensuring legitimate pathways for post-study migration.

Financially, Australian student visa eligibility now demands increased savings, with the requirement raised to $24,505. This move aims to ensure the financial stability of international students.

In the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced several amendments to immigration policies, restricting family migration for overseas students, except those pursuing postgraduate research degrees. The government further limited students' ability to switch from visas to work routes before completing their studies. A review of the post-study work visa is also in progress.

Canada, witnessing immigration challenges, implemented a stringent verification process for post-secondary designated learning institutions to confirm the authenticity of acceptance letters. Additionally, the country is reevaluating its Post-Graduation Work Permit Program to align with labor market needs and immigration goals.

France extended its post-study work visa for Master’s students to five years, attracting international students with improved opportunities. Similarly, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, and the United States have rolled out modifications in their visa policies, focusing on language testing, duration of stay, and authentication procedures, aiming to streamline international student migration while ensuring authenticity and security in the application process.

These changes reflect a collective effort among nations to maintain the integrity of their education systems and create sustainable pathways for international students, offering them a smoother transition into their chosen academic landscapes abroad.
