The inauguration ceremony for the ASEAN-India Hackathon was addressed by Union Education Minister Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank. Dr. Pokhriyaal, while addressing, said that the Hackathon has been launched by the Ministry of Education to further the ties of the ASEAN and India.

In 2019, PM Narendra Modi, during his trip to Singapore India Hackathon 2019, also expressed his wish to hold a Hackathon with ASEAN countries, as recalled by Dr. Pokhriyal while addressing. He further added that a unique opportunity will also be provided through the Hackathon to India and ASEAN countries to resolve their frequent recognized issues under two themes 'Education' and 'Blue Economy' which will act as an opportunity to strengthen the cultural and economical ties through partnership in education, science and technology.

Dr. Pokhriyal, while highlighting the research and academic ties, further added that India-ASEAN has its base in shared religion, beliefs, and culture as well as they have academic and research ties such as several Indian universities host students from ASEAN partner countries like IIT Delhi, Tezpur University, etc. The Govt. of India has also launched, exclusively for ASEAN candidates, 1000 ASEAN Ph.D. Fellowships.

An initiative of Ministry of Education, the India-ASEAN Hackathon will be organized from Feb 01 to Feb 03, 2021, and the prize distribution ceremony will be conducted on Feb 04, 2021. The Hackathon is being organized for India and all 10 countries to further the cultural and economical ties through collaboration in S & T and education.
