GENEVA- World leaders declared US$826 million to Education Cannot Wait (ECW) and the global challenge in order to support the education of 222 million crisis-impacted girls and boys.
This announcement was made at the (ECW) Education Cannot Wait High-Level Financing Conference on February 16 and 17 in Geneva, Switzerland.
In all, 17 donors announced commitments to Education Cannot Wait (ECW), including five contributions from new donors- the Global Business Coalition, Italy, Qatar, Spain, and Zürcher Kantonalbank. Just over one month into the multilateral Fund's new 2023-26 Strategic Plan, these landmark pledges already amount to more than half the US$1.5 billion needed to reach 20 million kids and adolescents.
Worldwide, 222 million children affected by conflict, climate instability, forced displacement, and other lengthy crises urgently require quality education.
Switzerland is co-convening the High-Level Financing Conference with Education Cannot Wait and the Governments of Norway, Niger, Colombia, Germany, and South Sudan.
Germany remains Education Cannot Wait's largest donor. Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Svenja Schulze, said Today's pledges would help to give millions of the most helpless young people hope. Germany already reported last year that we will support the Strategic Plan in order to help these children with €210 million for the next four years.
The UK offered the most considerable new commitment for the day, announcing £80 million in new funding to Education Cannot Wait. Andrew Mitchell, Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office Minister, said we are reviving our dedication to education in crises because we decline to give up on the 222 million children and adolescents impacted by war, disaster, and displacement.
Canada declared CAD$87.5 million in renewed funding during the high-level pledging session. Minister of International Development Harjit S. Sajjan said we would continue to work with our partners to help to guarantee that quality education is available for all children.
Yasmine Sherif, Executive Cannot Wait, said even when we achieve our $1.5 billion target, we will not discontinue there. With generous contributions, we will be able to reach 10 million crisis-impacted children with a high-quality education. This initiative is our investment in humanity.
