Sean Fraser, Canada’s Immigration Minister, announced that the Canadian government extended the work permits of PGWP holders for up to 18 months.
The minister informed that individuals with an expiring post-graduation work permit (PGWP) could easily apply for an Open Work Permit extension as of April 6, 2023.
The Open Work Permit extension will be available to those whose post-graduation work permit (PGWP) expires this year-2023.
It will also be open to those whose post-graduation work permit (PGWP) expired last year-2022 and who applied for Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)s Open Work Permit extension the previous year.
From April 6, candidates can apply for the extension on the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) official website.
After applying for the permit extension, the applicants will get an email with a temporary work permit authorisation which they can show employers to resume working lawfully in Canada.
About PGWP
Post-Graduation Work Permits are open to international students who graduate from a qualified academic programme at a Canadian-designated learning institution (DLI). Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) are universities, colleges, and other educational institutes authorized by the government to welcome international students.
PGWPs allow international graduates to work for any employer in Canada. The maximum duration they can work is for three years. PGWPs are coveted by international students due to the nature of Canada’s economic class immigration programmes. Many of these programmes reward candidates who have learned and worked in Canada.
