Indian embassy releases guidelines for students who are yet to start classes. With many Indian students incompetent to join the academic courses in Canada owing to processing delays of visas and student permits, the Indian High Commission in Ottawa has instructed the authorities to look into the matter instantly.

The high commission reported that officials in Ottawa and Consulates in Toronto and Vancouver are in contact with Canadian interlocutors, including academic institutions and universities, concerning the issue.

The advisory stated that spotlighting these issues and the truth that Indian students have already deposited tuition fees with the Canadian Institute, we requested the Canadian authorities to speed up the processing of visa applications for Indian students. Canada has materialized as a preferred destination for Indian students for post-secondary education. But high commission added the processing of visas is a sovereign power of the government of Canada.

How can students find help under such occurrences?

  • Universities reported that they are in touch with incoming international students, including students from India, offering them timely, actionable knowledge and updates about all issues associated with the study permit application process.

  • They already have emergency plans to support those incoming international students who do not receive their study permits in time to be present on campus when the term begins in September.

  • Some institutions will offer a distance learning option for students unable to reach Canada at the start of the term because they have not yet received their visas. Students can contact the university or institute to find out which courses have a distance learning option and to discuss their views in case some do not.

  • For students wishing to postpone their admission, the university or institute is communicating to students about options, including delaying the offer of entrance to a later term or considering exceptional circumstances on a case-by-case basis.

  • Affected students are encouraged to send a request for information and speed in the processing via an IRCC web form meant for study permit applications that have been submitted and finished but have overreached the current processing time for Student Direct Stream (SDS) scheme.
