The Ministry of Education organised a one-day consultation workshop on Reimagining Vocational Education and Career Guidance for school-going students.

UNICEF and YuWaah organised the one-day workshop on December 16, 2022.

The one-day workshop covered discussions on various ideas related to reimagining and reinventing vocational education modules. The essence of life skills- both vertical & horizontal, aspirational disconnect and information asymmetry in the absorption of vocational education school and delivering a gender perspective to vocational education were also focussed.

According to an official statement, under the NEP 2020, the aim should be to empower students with skills such as cloud computing, machine learning, robotic process automation, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and data analytics so that vocational graduates can compete in the global economy. The need to install virtual labs so that all students have access to high-quality practical and hands-on experience was also highlighted during the one-day workshop.

The consultation workshop also profited from the feedback from students who have taken vocational programmes, including a multi-skilling and an IT course.

Sanjay Kumar, Secretary of the Department of School Education and Literacy, chaired the consultation workshop and two roundtables interactions- including with the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Directorate General of Training (ITI), NCERT, NCVET, AICTE, CBSE, PSSCIVE, Bhopal.

The workshop and roundtable interaction was also accompanied by varied professionals from PwC, YuWaah, Civil Society organisations, state education department, practitioners and organisations operating in vocational education and career counselling, corporates, and current and passed-out students.

During the keynote speech, the Secretary of the Department of School Education and Literacy pointed out that India requires to catch up with other countries in terms of skilling the workforce via traditional vocational training during the student years. He added NEP 2020 has determined such issues and has proposed remedial actions.

Ms. Dhuwarakha Sriram, Chief of Generation Unlimited of YuWaah, Youth Development and Partnerships, and Terry Durian, Chief of Education, UNICEF, also addressed the consultations.

The second roundtable reflected upon the current methods of career counseling in schools and what are the key learnings and most suitable practices. Secretary DOSEL said that solutions should focus on constructing an institutional model of career counseling in schools with scale, speed, and sustainability using technological innovations, including artificial intelligence. He also said there was a requirement to map resources and construct a database of the same. Discussions on career guidance also deliberated on the role of physical interventions and career counselling that could be done in schools itself.
