In Canadian public schools, the numbers of international students are recovering from steep fall in enrolments caused by the pandemic, as per new data released by CAPS-I. The ong-term enrolments, i.e. 04 months or longer, touched 24,915 in 2021/22, as compared to the 19,100 from the previous academic year whereas the short-term enrolments, i.e. less than 04 months, spiked by 30%. CAPS-I informs that this represents 'a fraction of pre-pandemic numbers'.
In 2021-22 year, the students from 131 countries came to Canada.
2014-15 | 2015-16 | 2016-17 | 2017-18 | 2018-19 | 2019-20 | 2020-21 | 2021-22 | |
Long-term | 24,548 | 26,005 | 32,675 | 36,214 | 37,963 | 35,836 | 19,101 | 24,917 |
Short-term | 9,281 | 5,323 | 8,097 | 8,937 | 7,850 | 5,644 | 1,845 | 2,398 |
As compared to the peak long-term enrollments, the current foreign numbers are still low by 34%.
This relatively slow growth for the sector emanates in large area from drop from China as it remains the top sender of long-term enrollments to Canadian schools. However, the flow of students from this market hass decreased in 2021/22 as the numbers are not even half as compared to the numbers in 2018/19.
Other top senders with fewer learners are South Korea and Vietnam.
Meanwhile, the public-school sector was boosted by somewhat more students arriving from Hong Kong, Japan, and European countries.
Japanese enrolments noted a new rise in 2021/22, and Hong Kong sent 40% more students. The number of Japanese students has made the country the 5th most important sender.
In 2021-22, Germany sent 2,500 more students than the previous year and Italy's numbers were 1,300 more which was twice as compared to the pre-pandemic record. Turkey, Spain, and Switzerland are also current senders for the public schools of Canada.
In case of Short-term enrolments, Japan, and also Columbia, sent more to Canadian schools than China in 2020/21. Germany and South Korea are among the top 05 sending markets for short-term students in 2021/22 to Canada.
