The Bavarian State of Germany is preparing to initiate tuition fees for non-European students, and unions defending students' rights have opposed the decision. Deutsches Studentenwerk (DSW), the organization portrays 57 student unions described its position against the initiative of tuition fees for international or non-European students from third countries and stated that tuition fees are poison for equal opportunities.
In its answer to the disapproval, Deutsches Studentenwerk (DSW) pointed out that financing studies are one of the primary challenges 325,000 international students in Germany face, and by launching a new tuition fee, Germany will not only lose international students but also put the country's locational advantage at risk, which is the eviction from tuition fees. Undoubtedly, this freedom from tuition fees sets Germany apart from additional education-providing countries and marks it as the essential non-English speaking host country for international students, right behind the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia.
DSW Secretary-General Matthias Anbuhl explains that although they have to prove that they have enough budgets to register in the amount of €10,300, the authentic expenses of studying abroad cause them problems, especially the rental costs. He added that with the bridging aid from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, a disproportionately high share of 30 percent of the budget went to international students. On top of that, the organization argues that the initiative of the new Bavarian Higher Education Innovation Act has proved to be unsuccessful by all means, as Baden-Württemberg previously did so, and the decision caused the state an intense drop in international students from non-European countries.
On the other hand, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia has determined against the introduction of such feeds, also due to massive administrative effort. As per the data from the first education platform- Erudera.com, the Bavarian state shelters 48,625 international students and building it the second most sought state in Germany, right behind North-Rhine-Westphalia, which is the top federal state in Germany with the higher number of international students ( 73,881). Regardless, the total number of international students seeking academic careers in Germany is 416, 437, with this given number growing by 38.1 percent between the years 2014 and 2021.
The primary countries of sources for international students in Germany are China (40,122) students, India (28,542), Syria (16,931), Russia (10,573), Iran (10,561), and Turkey (10,018). Other countries of the source make up the leftover share of international students in Germany, including Italy (8,576), Cameroon (7,970), Tunisia (6,729), Ukraine (6,572), and France (6,532).
