The Indian Institute of Science Education & Research, Pune's team of 12 students has secured a gold medal at the iGEM Synthetic Biology Competition 2021. The results of the competition were declared from Nov 04 to Nov 14.

The iGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machine), an independent non-profit organization, organized the competition. The Organization also works to advance the synthetic biology, education, and competition.

Over the last few months during the competition, the team worked on the research project. The team's project 'Synbactory' aimed to develop a sustainable model to synthesize chemical compounds through a co-culture of 02 bacterial strains. The team also aimed at avoiding methods that involve resource-intensive plant biomass or carbon-emitting petrochemicals.

The IISER Pune's official informed that the team developed the bacterial co-culture to create butanol, a chemical with fuel applications.

The winning team included Misaal Bedi, Ashwin Uday, Sanjana Vasanth, NamasivayamGomathi Sankar, Ashli Jain, Vidisha Hate, Likhith Chandragiri, Soorya Narayan, Arsh Shaikh, Arya Narnapatti, Akash Dutta, and Jason Joby.

iGEM Competition is conducted annually worldwide for higher, undergraduate university, and graduate students. The aim of the competition is to provide the opportunity to the students to push the limits of the synthetic biology to tackle everyday issues.
