(IISER)- Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Bhopal’s Centre for Science and Society (CS2) arranged a summer outreach camp from May 15, 2023, on the role of science in society and comprised understandings and insights from the humanities and social sciences. About 130 students from Classes IX, X, and XI from schools across the nation actively participated in the summer camp. Out of 130, 17 tribal students were chosen from CM Rise Schools in Madhya Pradesh.

The summer outreach camp covered subjects such as natural and engineering sciences. The event included speeches, talks, and hands-on laboratory experimentations and demonstrations. Students got the chance to engage and connect with their seniors and actively participated in activities, such as quiz contests, painting competitions, open mic sessions, and sports activities. On the last day, students and volunteers received certificates and prizes.

Siva Umapathy, director of IISER Bhopal, said, “IISERs were established to provide world-class education in science to students in India. The Institutes perform research in several cutting-edge areas of science and technology. The camp aims to encourage and motivate students to seek careers in science and technology and offer them an opportunity to interact with prominent scientists and researchers. By delivering such platforms to school students, they can dig the available opportunities in the right way and discover and understand science creatively and engagingly.”

Head of Centre for Science and Society, IISER Bhopal, Raghuvir Singh Tomar, said, “We have been doing this activity for the previous seven years, but the students’ feedback is something which allows us to [make] continued progress and a desire to deliver the best learning experience possible. I hope the students are profiting immensely from the knowledge and expertise shared by the faculty.”
